The notes are in midi, right? I just entered a single note and drug it for 8 bars and it worked. I had to change the patch to strings in order for it play through those bars. The piano only lasted two bars and decayed out.
You should be able to "drag" any midi note in the piano roll to however many bars you want. You will need a sustaining type of midi patch in order for it to play those bars as well.
You could also try the notation entry. R-click on the note(s) in notation-edit-mode and change the duration of the note there as well. That should yield the same as the drag in piano roll.
This will not work if you are using a Real Track on the melody channel, only midi data.
