WMP has a kickass multiband compressor and bass enhancer (aka SRS WOW--View/Enhancements/SRS WOW) that make for some pretty good ear candy.
That's assuming they're on. If not, give them a try. I cannot otherwise explain a difference in sound quality between the two players.
