I have never used or needed a contract before but a couple of upcoming gigs have me concerned. Does anyone have a simple, generic contract I could have please.

Unless you're talking a lot of money and I mean thousands a contract is a waste.
I had a contract for New Years Eve many years ago for I think around $500.The club decided to cancel the day before cause they hadn't sold enough tickets. Went to small claims Court & yup the Judge ruled in our favor. Does he have to pay? No. You now need to file a lawsuit against this person to retrieve. Small claims is sort of like non binding arbitration.
I know this ain't what you asked but thought I'd mention it.States may very.

Can you have them "pay before I play" type of thing? So you don't go there, set up, play, tear down etc . . . and then get "stiffed?"
I don't have a clue about a contract, sorry. But, see if you can have them pay you when you arrive for set up, not after.

I never worked without a contract until I came back to music a couple years ago. I was surprised that they seem to be a thing of the past.
However, even with a contract, if someone wants to stiff you, they will.

We always used contracts. We demanded a non-refundable down payment of 20%. We never had a problem and we had more work than we could handle.
The bumper sticker said "I'm a veterinarian, therefore I can drive like an animal".
Suddenly I realized how many proctologists are on the road.

We asked for half when we showed up.
Loading, unloading, setting up is half the work, we were obviously going to play now ...
And we were taking our stuff home with us, so reloading was understood.
If possible, talk to others who have played there, it could be worth more than the contract. Owners who shorted guys got the lesser quality bands for the weekend. The good bands wouldn't play there. They learn that way.
If you get a chance, watch One Trick Pony (movie). Apparently even Paul Simon, with a big name band and managers and contracts got stiffed once in a while.. the cost of trying to recoup the money cancelled the gain.

All very good points above. Like many of you in the "old days" I used to use contracts all the time, but now it seems they are not even thought about when booking gigs with local establishments and companies. I always tell my "pending boss" especially, if it is a local establishment or private company that our best contract is that you know where I live, and I know where you live. With this said neither of us want any unfavorable talk about us going on around town, and with the internet it could be even more damaging. So my bet is that we will treat each other with respect and live up to our joint commitments. Now if ever the price of music goes up beyond that trust level, and there is a point where it does,ink will hit paper once again.
Edited portion: I do have a couple of accounts that are known late payers, sometime even short payers. With these accounts I let them know in no uncertain terms I get paid before the equipment comes out of my trailer.
