is there a way to force the showing of longer notes?
i am trying to enter a fingerstyle arrangement and want the open strings to be 1/2 notes but they default to 1/4 notes when i put in the next part.
i understand how to make them "sound" like a 1/2 note by changing the duration in piano roll mode, BUT is there a way to show it on the page (computer and paper)?

I don't understand.
When you enter a note in band in a box the line designates that it is a whole note. When you put in the next note on the grid the assumption is made that you have chosen to make the note the interval in the duration.
To me your question does not have enough 'flesh'. Tell us how you are entering the note, where, and what you are seeing, then doing. Perhaps then we can formulate an answer.
And, you are in the wrong forum. If it's a Band in a Box question it goes there. Here is the forum for someone who has a great explanation of something and wishes to expound on it.
It does not get the traffic that the other forum gets. So in the future...
For now either others will understand you, and wade in, or you need to expound on your question..

I am teaching a simple little waltz to a guitar student of mine.
I would like to use the guitar track to write out a simple chordal accompaniment for her. i want the notation to show that she plucks the "A" bass string and let's it ring for the full 3 beats in the bar. Then i want to show her the little 3 note chord she will pull out of the treble strings on the other frets. BIAB will default the first sustained bass note into a 1/4 note as soon as i put in the next note.
Instead of thinking linearly or melodically i am trying to get BIAB to allow me to show the "overlapping" of notes. i can get the sound i want by going into the notation and forcing the note to play for the required amount of time. but i cannot figure out how to get the program to visually show the note.
make more sense?
