I am getting stuttering and inconsistent speed on playback. I have a P4 with 1 gig ram and a separate drive for audio, windowa XP with a layla 3g interface. I tried aisio but could not get it to work at all, just hummed and howled . So I am back yo MME drivers. Will changing some of the audio preferences help. If so give me some suggestions please. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like system strain (at least first thing I'd suspect). Do you have lots of processes running in the background? Antivirus, etc can interrupt the system.
Biggest improvement seen here was going to 2 gig RAM. Is the separate drive for audio external or internal?
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

Separate drive is also internal. when did one gig of ram get to be uder spec. Ive been running power tracks since versio 8. Wish I had half a gig back then (laugh). I use end it all to delete unnecessary backround activities. Any opinions on asio4all. Just a thought. I never have more than 8 tracks of digital audio. I do strictly mellow contemporary jazz with midi drums and keys. Not to much audio. More hardware effects than plugins. My current song for example only involves 2 plugins. No antivirus by the way my interrnet duties are all handled by another system. My Studio computer is not even conected.

ASIO4all is worth trying.
As the programs progress (more and more features) and systems begin to get cluttered that extra bit of RAM is one of the best performance increasing tricks around. May/ may not be the problem here.
What plugins are you running? Sometimes rogue plugins can cause problems like this .. Softsynths being used? I have canon video software installed on one system and it causes problems when it decides to check if the camera is connected.. so ending all unnecessary processes is a good idea.

First of all thanks for the assistance Rharv.:I dont use nor know how to use softsyths. I have an ASR 10 sampler a M1 a Proteus FX, and an Alesis drum module for midi sounds. All midi is hardwarwe. Plugs are PG, UAD, and Sony. The only non comercial plugs are the blue series, which I really like. Except guitar, bass, latin percussion and the ocassional horn most tracs are predominately midi samples.

I enjoyed the Blue series also, but found they were one brand that caused issues on the main music system here. Wish they didn't but they did, in XP a couple years ago.
May try removing those temporarily (in the FX window is a button to exclude certain plugins, and they can be added again later once removed from the exclude list). May be worth testing.
Is both MIDI and AUDIO stuttering? May be that you need that RAM for the higher end plugins you have. It's pretty inexpensive to add 1 gig to a P4 usually. What is in there now? A single stick, two sticks? If three sticks we may have found a clue.

Memory is 2 half gig sims. But I will try the blue plug removal thing and get back to you. Its hard to track down though because it happens so intermitently. Do you suggest trying the asio4all first or the plug removal.

For awhile, UAD plugins required an add-on PCI card because they were such processor hogs (if I remember correctly).
Those are some very pricey plugins both monetarily and computationally.

My UAD plugs are on a pci card. Do UAD cards often cause problems? My timing problems started years after the UAD was installed. So no one seems to think audio prefernce could help me? I used to hear posts about buffering etc etc....

Only if using ASIO do the buffers come inbto play.
MME should be pretty stable. Is both MIDI and AUDIO stuttering? If it happens very intermittently you may just run out of resources after a while.
Save, Close down PT and restart it every so often.. don't try to record for hours without ever restarting.

Yes both audio and midi slow and a couple of time even stopped then started then stopped then started. Very odd. Hard to reproduce though. Maybe this might happen every 4,5 times I open power tracs. Very random. I think before I invest in ram I would rather buy a new pc. They all seem to come with 4 gigs of ram and 500 gig hard drives now.
