I never record a bass thru the speaker, the soundwaves are too big and take a bit to develop.
Line out of amp/FX pedal or using a direct box is preferred here.

There is a lot of bass content in the bottom range (60-120 Hz) and again around 2kHz. Don't lose the top end. There is a lot of character there. Losing these frequencies makes the bass have a lot less charater. An old saying is a bass track should sound like they are working on a buick in the background. This is true in my experience.
Also I often roll off the very bottom end, cutting from 40Hz-50Hz on down. Helps to clean the bass up and make it clearer.

Often there is a compressor used in the amp/FX pedal when recorded thru the line out. If so this will often suffice. If not, I have no qualms about using one in the computer. Actually PGMusic comes with the PGDynamcs plugin which has some nice bass presets as a starting point. One of the better preset selections in the whoe suite of plugins IMHO.
