any comments? as you may have seen from previous posts, it's still not clear whether my HyperCanvas will work with Windows 7 64 bit so I may have to download the Coyote.
Anyone tried them side by side?

The HC works in Win 7 64 but you have to go to Roland's website and download and install the Vista driver first. Just type "Hypercanvas Win 7" into Google and the link to the exact page pops up. You should try Google first for stuff like this you know, it's faster than posting a question here. If you can't find anything that way, then post here. Google is your friend.
As to the sound quality, that's purely subjective. I think the Coyote Forte DXi that PG sells for $40 sounds a bit better but I don't use either much any more because I have a Roland Sonic Cell and that blows both of them away. Note the Forte DXi is not the Coyote Wavetable. The Wavetable is nothing but a small piece of code that allows your PC to use the totally crap soundchip on your mobo as a DXi.

thanks jazzmammal - had been on the roland site - but even when you do that the search for the patch is shown as 'filtered by vista and windows 7', but windows 7 does not appear in the supported OS list.......
hence asking if anyone had actually tried it!

Right, I completely understand. This is yet another case of us having to be total geeks to make this stuff work. I had already read somewhere that almost all Vista drivers for most devices work in Win 7 so I already knew that. Another geeky thing is doing a Google search will usually turn up a link to the exact page where the driver is and is much faster than trying to navigate Roland's website. Just get used to using Google or Bing or whatever search engine you prefer for every little thing. It it truly amazing sometimes. I've had Google find a thread on this forum faster than doing a forum search here plus you get other links.

Not to belabor the argument on several threads, but, actually, that's not really true. The Coyote WT allows you to use the Microsoft Wavetable (software) as a DXi. Doesn't matter if you have a totally crap soundchip or a $1000 soundcard on your computer. The sounds come from a file (which I forget the name of at the moment, but is easy to find) on your computer and play through whatever sound card you have. It's part of the Windows installation. I think that was what Peter was getting at earlier in his discussion with Bob Norton. The soundchip/card/whatever on your computer has NO MIDI sounds, just like BIAB has no MIDI sounds. Microsoft provides a basic set of sounds so you can play MIDI without buying anything else; PGMusic provides the Coyote WT so you can use it as a DXi, so you don't have to buy anything else. But they're not in the MIDI soundset business, so if you want better sounds, there are options. But you're not dead in the water just because all you have is what Windows gave you. It's still software.
Splitting hairs, yes, but I hope you get my point.

Good point(s) John. It has been, in computer terms, millenia since the FM thing and soundchip business died. But the dead horse seems to love flogging. Even now when the horse is bloated and smells bad. Because there are so many apps that still use midi the technology sits there, silent for the most part. At times a website or something fires up the old midi player thing, hidden under the generic player. Midi plays one note after the other, and often sounds 'cheesy' due to the precise timing etc. RealTracks are the same concept, but with phrases instead of tiny samples, and humanized by real players. This is where your computer comes up with something that's going to be hard to duplicate. Microsoft might do well to borrow from Linux here. Market a musicians version of the o/s with something akin to Garageband, some DAW thing, an updated midi sounds and heaven knows what they could roll in there. So you could get. An O/s tweaked for, and optimized to do music, including some software that covers most bases. (Only $99 more) An O/s tweaked for movie making. An O/s tweaked for still photography. An O/s tweaked for security. Comes with cameras, a home security system, remote monitoring, and the box includes a silver plated S&W.   LOL

Very true John. Note my post is from May, 2011 and I've since been corrected.
One flaw in the HC is the standard kit bass drum velocity. It's stuck at 127 so no matter what you do with the overall drum kit mix, the bass drum will keep booming out way too loud. All you can do is lower the overall drum track volume but when you do that the whole kit is now too soft when all you want is to bring the bass drum down. Biab has an automatic thing that pops up a box asking if you want to change the bass drum patch to a different one. Say yes and all is good. Unfortunately Real Band doesn't have that so you have to go into the drum kit and change it manually then save it as a user kit. For some reason Roland never corrected this, who knows why. That may be one reason it's out of production.

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums.
