When ASIO is causing you problems. ASIO is only needed to reduce latency or delay when you're trying to play a softsynth live. Usually MME has about a half second of latency and you can't play along with that kind of delay. Other than that, ASIO does squat for you because that latency doesn't matter for playback. You can notice it sometimes visually if you look at the keyboard display while a song is playing, you'll see the keys lighting up a half second behind the music. If that really bothers you then use ASIO to reduce the latency if it doesn't mess up your system. I was having problems with ASIO for years with my old system but with my new Phenom 6 core it works perfect. I've read that ASIO puts a lot of strain on your system so if it can depend on how many tracks you're playing at once, if you have effects plugins going on how many tracks etc. If you're having problems maybe your PC just isn't up to it.
