VU's only work for audio, if they worked for midi it was because you were using a softsynth to create audio from the midi.

Tell us what you have selected for MIDI drivers; and what other choices you have. If you get the MIDI message on opening the program something is wrong in the MIDI settings to begin with.
Do not use MIDIMapper, as this relies on windows to route the midi wherever it feels like it.
After selecting one, remember to click the 'move selected device to top' button so it becomes the default.

Do the same thing for the Audio drivers; when going to MME it may be selecting SoundMapper, which again let's windows run the show. ASIO drivers don't allow this to happen. Select the correct MME drivers for your card and click 'move selected device to top' again.

ASIO4All is an option, but I'd try to fix the real problem first.
