After months of screwing around, buying new audio hardware, cable etc. I came across this. It does the job for $30.00 http://www.abyssmedia.com/isound7/ Wish I had found it earlier. Simple and effective. You can try it free.

Been there done that. On my old XP machine with the soundcard I could easily record anything that my speakers would play, not so when I moved over to my Win 7. Just like you "screwing around for months", until I just want back to the XP when I needed this feature. So I'll give it a try and let you know how it works for my hardware.

I have win 7.
I fire up Audacity.
I even used it the other day as a quick and dirty way to record audio from a youtube clip.
Turn of the system sounds though.
No one needs a recording of that windoze startup announcement.
It's click Audacity record, start band in a box, and shut 'er off.

I don't think it is an Operating System thang, but more a Sound card driver thang. Back on my XP I hade an external Sound Blaster for which I could easily find a "record what you hear" feature in the drivers, but over in my new Win 7 I installed an M-Audio Audiophile 192 and getting it to "record what you hear" was simply a pain. If I was able to do it once, I could not figure out how to do it a second time. So I install the free download (limited to 100 secs of record) here on my Win 7, pushed the record button and it recorded from my speakers with no further setup on my part. I'm impressed - thanks for the referral.

One thing to try is to go to right click on the speaker icon in the tray (bottom right of your screen), select "Recording Devices", then right click in an open area on the Recording Devices screen, and make sure to check "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices". That sometimes allows "Stereo Mix" or "What-U-Hear" to show up, and then you can select it.

Hello, Iam new at this so please acept my aplogy in advance for any mistakes.
I noticed that you are an expert with band in a box. So I thought i might ask you a question about entering notation; particuarly hammer-on's, pull-offs, slides and the like. Any help would be greatly appriciated

Sorry, maybe I'm missing something.
There is no need to screw around for months.
And Windows 7 is no different than XP ... or Windows 3.1 for that matter.
The ability to "use your default playback device (Speakers) for recording"
has been available for years.
I used to use LP Recorder. - http://www.cfbsoftware.com/lprecorder/lprecorder.aspx

Here is the problem, it is a driver thang. In my case when I moved to Win 7 I replace my sound card with an M-Audio Audiophile 192. The Win 7 driver for this PCI card does not have a "record what you hear" feature. This is a well known issue with this card\driver which is the lament of many over in the M-Audio forum where this is a common topic. I have not check in some time but the win 7 driver just would not do this.  Here is a recent rant from the M-Audio forum on the topic.

If your sound card doesn't have 'what you hear' you can always just connect your output jack to your line in jack with the appropiate rca cable and that way you can record 'anything you hear'.....but you may not be able to monitor that input signal in some cases. It works for me.

Perhaps it is a Sound Blaster thing, but I have given up on Creative Labs for several other reasons. Maybe it is coincidental with Windows 7, but I do not want to crawl under my desk, not purchase a Coaxial-SP/DIF device with another wall wort to record "What You Hear."
I use a Ketron SD4 for its great acoustic sounds, but also prefer RealTracks most of the time. Do the M-Audio Ultra FastTrack also serves as a mixer. It's control panel can be a little confusing, but once you get the software returns right it works with iSound7. I use Audacity as well as Sound Forge, and could not get both the External sound module and Real Tracks to record together. This program nails it.

Chris, since you're new and this is your first post, I'll explain. Don't post a completely unrelated question in the middle of a discussion thread about a different subject. Your question is perfectly legitimate, just post it as a new question by hitting the "Post" button not the "Reply" button. And don't reply here to what I just said, just post your question by starting a new thread.
