dave, i had a very similar idea. we have a big gazebo here in the courtyard of the nursing home and my dynavox speech synthesis device has internet capabilities. i was hoping to surf while in the gazebo. would be way cool and awesomeosis. i fear 100 feet (30 m) is wishful thinking though.

I can go out in the front/back yard and use wifi.
Also I am doing some work for a company that owns 103 acres, all covered by wifi. They use multiple towers though.

It can be done, but not with $50 wireless router.

I use 'N' at home (decent linksys router) and get over an acre of coverage (from a wireless 'N' router that's sitting 3' below ground level). It's very protected (PCI compliant), easily monitored, and reliable. Granted; I'm in the middle of nowhere with little interference, lots of open space (well there are lot of trees). Plus I see my neighbors networks as available and they are a couple hundred feet away (even 'g' networks are detected).. maybe I'm just in one of those areas where it works well.

Surprisingly, the kitchen seems to get a weak signal while the backyard registers as strong .. and it is further away if measured. Go figger.

Get an 'N' router and adapter and you should get pretty decent range.

/IMO, and I am NOT a network expert, just seem to have good luck.

In Paris (France) all yer parks have wi-fi for free. But no peer to peer downloads or skype.

I got free wi-fi almost everywhere, trains, hotels, and public places. Of course we have better curling conditions.

30m shouldn't be a problem at all unless there's something that may shield the signal. WiFi signals (2.4 GHz) tend to follow surfaces a bit. Thus you can have several walls between you and the access point and provided the doors are open you'll still connect. Conversely, glass (a closed window or french door etc.), will almost certainly stop it, or at least attenuate the signal quite a bit. If the access point is in your room, AND your room is on the same side of the building as the gazebo, then just leave the window open.

I live in the mountains and can barely see my neighbor but my wifi card keeps trying to connect to him.

lawrie, my cordless phone is 2.4ghz and it's crystal clear in the gazebo. that's very encouraging. i have 2 cinder block walls and 1 glass wall between my desktop wifi source and the gazebo. so, what, exactly, do i need? i have 2 usb ports and 1 memory card slot on my dynavox. i prefer to use the card slot and reserve the usb ports, if possible.

G'day Don,
I assume you already have a wifi device for the dynavox(?) so I would just use it as you already do.

If you don't already have a wifi adapter for it or if it's not already built in, then you have to get in touch with Dynavox...

I don't remember exactly what power levels the average cordless phone uses so I can't compare that with a wifi device but provided the power levels of the wifi device(s) are adequate then you shouldn't have any trouble at all. IIRC the relative power levels are fairly similar... Best thing to do is try it.

If there are problems, try opening the window.
