Hello Mel,
One option that comes to mind is using the Audio Chord Wizard to create a Tempo Map. If you were to render the midi information into audio and then open that audio with the Audio Chord Wizard, you could use it to detect the tempo of the piece. You could supply the starting bar, and from there, it will do its best to alter the tempo to match the improv.
