These Two Trains

A long ride home
On a cold black night
Two trains on a track
Rolling south and out of sight

The sound of a crossing
Like a promise made
Is drifting in the wind
Just another stop along the way

Pre Chorus:
And the years roll on by
And the night is a veil
And the sun keeps on rising
Along the rails

Chorus:
I hear the thunder
As the snow turns to rain
But the light in the depot
Lays a path for these two trains

Dreaming ’bout Asheville
As the whistle whines
Two trains climb the hills
Rolling through blue mountain pines

How many winters
Like an endless haul
Two trains leave the station
Heading out in a midnight squall

Pre Chorus:
And the years roll on by
And the night is a veil
And the sun keeps on rising
Along the rails

Chorus:
Ev’ry trip is a passage
A turning weather vane
Flying under the stars
Is the shadow of these two trains

Very nice song! You two are on a roll- no pun intended! Love the harmonica on the very end sounding kinda like a train whistle. Cool! Is this the new blue mic Bob?

Dan,

Thanks - we appreciate the kind words. Josie built that harmonica track - I also love the way it sounds. We actually cut this song a couple of weeks ago, so the mic is my old Shure SM58.

Bob, Sundance - I wish my hearing could hear the quality of the production that I'm not hearing.
Hearing aids ain't ideal but they're better than not hearing any of the work done on this forum.

I really like the projects that you turn out - together or separately, they're top notch.

There is one thing that bothers me about this mix - now it is possible that my frequency losses may be the reason for this, but I find that the harmonica tends to walk on the lyrics in the verses in places, rather than comfortably being inserted "in the spaces".

I run into the same problem when I record my own harmonica tracks - I let it rip for a track and then go back and play only the vocal and harmonica tracks then actually cut out the licks fighting the vocal. Josie you did some good editing on those tracks, except for the positioning over the lyrics - I like to hear Bob's lyrics coming through. It's not that big a problem, but I find it intrudes . . . and I'm a harmonica player.

Mmmmm - they're cutting grass outside - nothing like the sweet smell of carcinogenic gas fumes and cut grass - seriously.

The great Gospel songwriter Dottie Rambo wrote a very famous song called We Shall Behold Him. She won the Gospel Songwriter of the Year for it. In her acceptance speech, she said "I just want to thank God that Lanny Wolf was asleep when I wrote this song, so God could give it to me instead of him."

Bob and Josie, when do you guys sleep, so some of us other writers can write some of these great songs?

Seriously, you guys are really doing a great job! This is another hit. Keep up the good work!

Steve

Hey Steve,

You are after my heart. Not just because of the great compliment for this song - and Bob and I thank you so much for that. What a wonderful compliment to say.

But I love that you mentioned Dottie. When I was a kid I bought her records and sang her songs in churches all over the south. LOL. She was a HUGE influence on me. I loved her music - when she and Reba and Buck sang together, it was ground breaking to me. What I consider the precursor to the contemporary Christian songs done today.

Bob and I are blessed we click as collaborators.

You are quite the prolific songsmith yourself.

Thanks again. So glad you enjoy the song.

Bob and Sundance,

Another great song. Just the way I like it, the vocals are right up front. They sound great.
One thing that bugs me, liking the vocals so much, why is the harmonica playing while you're singing?
That really doesn't need to be answered. It is just my opinion. It's just that so many songs I hear have an instrument stepping on the vocals. I've held my tongue about this on a lot of songs I've heard here. I made a comment a long time ago and the person really got angry at me. Their head exploded like I was anti-realtracks. I had to stop accepting PMs for awhile. lol...
I hope you don't take this the wrong way. I really love this song and the vocals are so clean and clear. Your personal style really shines through on this one.

Save it for the break and bring it up. But I'd kill it during the vocals.
Your voice sounds so good, when I hear the harmonica while you're singing, I want to unplug his mic.....lol

Super song, great sound and love your vocal style.

Hey Wayne,

Thanks so much for listening - Josie and I really value your feedback and are glad you liked the song. It means a lot.. We like the way the harmonica frames the vocal on this one, so will be keeping it as is - but thanks again for your perspective on it.

Nice work, as usual. In particular, I liked the pre-chorus with the staggered entrance of the harmony - sweet.

As to the harmonica... In the few times I've tried using it in a song, I've always gone way overboard with it, because it sounds so darned great with everything. Harmonica on the introduction? Great! Instrumental bridge? Fantastic! Lightly under the vocals? Sweet!

Then I had to figure where to take it out, because it was everywhere.

Most pop songs seem to be very selective about how much harmonica they actually use. Once it got into the verse, New Frontier (Donald Fagen) used very little harmonica, as does Catch That Train (America) and Sunday Papers (Joe Jackson).

Then again, Walkin' Through The Park (Muddy Waters) has harmonica running all the way through it, and it's no worse for it. So it doesn't really prove anything, does it?

Anyway, thanks for posting... I'm glad you're happy with the result, because you should be.

Thanks for listening and commenting. Josie and I always appreciate your point of view.

BTW, that's one of my favorite Muddy songs...
