I've got XP on three PC's and a Portable....but, do I care about the latest "XP" Shutout Scheme??? (I've also got an XP that's accepted with open arms by Apple Programs in General....for my IPOD touch. It's just a touchy thing that Apple won't, at this point at least, accept XP users into their fall "Cloud" for their ios 5 when it comes out in the fall with its highly touted application "for the future". Well, Microsoft has already done did its own exclusionary step when it barred XP from Windoze 7. \ http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/06/09/windows_xp_apple_icloud/

What is Apple's Cloudy program?
I've been thinking about the Amazon Cloud Drive account. I can get a year free of 20gbs for all my music online. Sounds like it's worth a try. I don't think even Apple can beat Amazon. My kids live in England and they use Macs. But they never buy from iTunes, they always buy Amazon. They don't use iPhones either. Ipods, yes. They love their Mac laptops, but the laptops seem to die in 2-3 years like all the rest. The iPods too. Lots of repairs too. Wayne,

Cubase 6 doesn't support XP. That doesn't say it won't run on XP. Steinberg just hasn't put any effort and costs in an outdated OS and therefor cannot and will not guarantee a perfect performance on XP. How far should a software developer have to go to offer backwards compatibility? Microsoft is now at Windows 7. Before that we had Vista. Before that it was XP. Every new version is designed (so they tell us) to offer more usability and better use of the newest hardware. When you develop software that runs on said OS, you want to take advantage of everything feature you can. Imagine you'd have to take Windows 3.11 into consideration when developing new software... So it's not necessarily a "shutout scheme" but rather a decision based on cost efficiency and outdated technique. (BTW: I'm running XP on my DAW and see no need to change until my DAW and BiaB stop working on XP. I hope they have Windows 8 or 9 by then )

I'm using "cloudy" as a nickname for iCloud, which is Job's idea of using Apple Cloud to store millions of bits of millions of programs, that you now will never have to "buy" because you can stream goodies from their servers in the sky...or perhaps even PG's server in the sky, someday. At a cost?? Sure...but nowhere near the cost of today's "packaged programs".
I've got an old 3rd Gen IPODTouch...never have had any problems and also a Neon...the little bugger that plays gigs of music and also takes great Space Shot and Doggies Romping Videos...never had any problems... In terms of where the music industry industry will end up....many say... up--up--and away.....in the "cloudy internet clouds, such as Apples proprietary one, that will have some distinct advantages (so they say) over other ones, such as EBays...and all of them saving you that precious space..., NOT on your own small computer hard drive.

Hi Mike, We have 3 PCs and they are running XP. At my wife's job and at our Library, which has about 12 PCs, they all use XP. I haven't seen a Vista computer yet in person. It seems like most people here just skipped Vista. We got our last PC 2 weeks before Vista came out and I was happy later that I missed it.
My wife had a couple of classes for work related training and they used new Gateway Laptops running Windows 7. I asked her how Win7 was. She said she didn't even notice. She loved it. She came home wanting a brand new Gateway Laptop though. I don't blame her. What she uses at work is older and cheaper than what we have at home.
She uses a 22" widescreen monitor at home, which helps with her eyesight, yet the brightness and clarity of the 15" Laptop display blew her away. She said she never saw anything so bright and clear. She emailed the instructor and he said they were LED displays, not LCD. I never saw one. Ours are all LCDs.
I'm glad that the next PC we get will be Win7. Maybe by then it will be Win8.
Wayne,

Well, there is going to be some interesting stuff from all of this.
Imagine, I could load all my Realtracks on a virtual 'cloud' drive and point Band in a Box at that.
Same idea as the iphone app or android app, but on stereos um steroids.
Then the problem. Someone gives someone else the 'key' to the files.
OR, PG music has the files in the cloud and you pay a penny every time you use them. OR, PG music has the files in the cloud and you buy them and get a key and register and now your version of Band in a Box goes for them in the cloud, never on your hard drive. OR, PG music gives away Band in a Box with 1 of each style, and you pay 5 cents for every time you play a song. (Or 10 or 2...)
Heck with the cloud they could be singing in the rain!
Problem is those "Here come those sunny days..." and it's cloudless. YIKES!

Hi redguitars,
I needed to update my old DAW with an XP OS recently and picked an HP Pavilion with Windows 7 plus an HP 22 LED screen. I picked the screen because I liked the quality and clarity of the display which suited my impaired eyesight, but was unaware until I had installed it that it was an LED not LCD screen. Incidently, with the exception of one VSTi all of my old XP programs loaded without problems - a number of which actually preceded Windows XP.

Hi Lyn, Thank you for the information. I brought up buying a new machine and installing XP. Most think it's a waste to go backwards. I have a lot of software I use every week that will not run on any OS past XP. Like you, this software is also from before XP. I run stuff on my XP machines that have a few crippled features, but they still run. I use a Photo Editor from Microsoft that I've been using since Win98 that we use almost daily.
I'll still pick up a new machine if it's a good deal and install XP on it. I have a brand new copy still sealed in the envelope of XP SP2. Then I can retire my really old Gateway that has really been through a lot. Even a flood. lol
I can't wait to see how different LED is from LCD. Either way, the price of new PCs now are very low and if I'm installing XP I don't need 6 or 8 gb of RAM.
Thanks a lot Lyn, Wayne,

With the size of most hard drives you can install a dual boot system. Actually all my stuff boots with either linux or Win7 now. Works fine.

You're right, you don't need gobs and gobs of gigs of RAM... Main thing is if you can get up into those clouds and stream all that "un-owned" or "borrowed" (for a small admission's price", then spend time organizing software music data on your old XP. Love to get up in the morning to the smell of Grass Fires and the multi-blinking-lights on my Seagate Cloud-Surfing Drives..."hundreds" of them daisy-chained via Multi-USB3-inputs.. "most" them blinking happily becuase they're getting the best of the best...down from those clouds and into my ol, ol XP's! * Of couse I use an "intermediary" for all this...an itty-bitty Apple I-Pod-Touch! just because of Apple's just published "FREEZE-OUT" of XP.
