I am working with one of the BIAB tracks for a slow ballad. The piano part often plays off the beat. It is just enough to sound like a drunken player who is not sure where the 1 beat is. I have been going through and using the piano roll editor to put a lot of these chords on the beat but it is time consuming. Is there a quantize function for this? I know there is one for Melody but does it work on the backing tracks?

Thanks.

Hi 2bSolo,

Do you know if you are working with MIDI styles, or RealTracks?

You could quantize by Edit-Copy Tracks, and copying the Piano part to the Melody part, and then quantizing.

It might be something else that you're looking for though... what style is it?

OK here goes.
I know not of your abilities or if you are a pro or not however the folks at PG are PROS and I doubt they've put out "drunken Player" parts. Let's explore this from a different angle.

Off beat piano players are the norm. I even syncopate. I know a bit of how it goes. It might be the style. Terminology and language get in the way. Clarification works, even with butter.

As to terms, my wife and I circumcise watches once a week.

If I were a baker I'd be on a roll. I find drum rolls dry.

Blake and Peter,

I am using a Midi style called Duke. I am using Real Drums with it. The bass and the drums are hitting the 1 beat accurately.

The idea of copying the piano part and quantizing that is interesting. I will try it.

Thanks to the two of you.

2bSolo

PS: For the record, I am NOT saying the people at BIAB would put out drunken PLAYER parts. I know they are PROS.

This might be what your hearing.
BIAB, in many of the styles has a setting to "push" a certain number of beats.
You'll find this setting in the Stylemaker, under the "Misc" menu selections.
There is a field for the "number of ticks to push" in that dialog. I suggest you set that to 0.
There is also a setting in the same dialog to "Allow Late Notes". Make sure that the checkbox is not checked on that screen so "late notes" will not be generated.

You might also turn off embillish for all patterns. I'm not sure if embellish introduces any "feel" effects, but it might. There is a setting under the "Style" menu in the stylemaker to "Set embellish for all piano/guitar parts". Put a zero in the box that pops up, and it will turn off embellish for all patterns.

My remarks are all in regard to the MIDI parts generated. Not realtracks.

Another option is to export to a MIDI file, then pull up that MIDI file in the DAW of your choice and quantize there.

Another thought: You might be playing it out of the range of tempos where the style sounds best.

A little anticipation or laid back feel that sounds great at mm=180 might sound terrible at mm=60
