Haven't used PT in a looong time. Have Version 11. Using PC.
Summary : I want to transfer song files from UTube, then load the song into PT in "separate" tracks. It now loads into 1 track. Is it possible to split the MP3 file into separate tracks so that I can delete the melody/main instrument and play along with the backing music? I have tried PG Vocal Remover, but it muffles the rest of the instruments as well. I am simply looking for good sounding backing tracks to play along with Sax.
What I can do...
1. Get songs from Utube - Can do this using MP3 Rocket freeware. It saves the file as MP3 in the Rocket MP3 folder.
2. Then I Open the file into PT. But it saves it on 1 track.
thanks

You can not un mix a cake once it is baked. MP3s are wave file commpressed down, the wave file can not be split completely, except maybe in Melodyne. I am not sure that can be done in MP3, but is worth some digging. Maybe a Melodyne nut will weigh in.

Hi Thailoneus,

Melodyne would be able to edit the pitch of individual parts, but I'm not sure it can separate them into separate tracks like that. I could be wrong though, haven't used Melodyne in a few years.

I do know that Prosoniq Sonicworx can do it. It's an expensive program, and requires a very powerful Mac to run. It also uses about a gig of hard drive space per minute of audio processed. Seems effective though, if you've got the cash and processing power.

In the meantime, you can use Band-in-a-Box's Audio Chord Wizard feature to analyze these audio files, and figure out the chord changes, so you can make your own version of the song using Band-in-a-Box's styles. It won't sound exactly the same as the original, but you'll have a backing track to jam with, and can do it with the software (and computer) you already own.

I hope this helps!

Melodyne Direct Note Access (DNA) is what you are looking for to do this directly from a mixed-down file. http://www.celemony.com/cms/index.php?id=dna

I don't have any claims of using this myself - it's a rather expensive feature that I can't imagine works terrifically well, but their demos using a Chet Baker audio recording are almost scary in how well they can un-mix the baked cake, to borrow from Robh's great terminology above.

Now, that recording in the demo had at most 5 'voices'; Chet's vox, trumpet, piano, drums and string bass. I don't know what you would do trying to pull the 2nd violin part out of an orchestral recording. They manipulated the melody directly, without affecting any of the other instrumentation. It was very 'futuristic' and disconcerting at the same time. Just do a YouTube search for 'Celemony Chet Baker' and I'm sure you'll hit the demo videos.

When Celemony released that demo, it caused quite an uproar that it was like the Soviets retouching photographs and removing or adding persons from photographic history.

However, I'm of the opinion that all tools can be used or abused - I think this one could have real potential to help the songwriter play with a hummed melody or throw in a minor where there was a major, etc - with audio. All the things we are used to doing with MIDI and do it without guilt or shame; now potentially available with audio.
