Hello All,

I've played out the last week with a repertoire of virtually all songs created almost exclusively with RealTracks. The jazz swing was especially well-received. One comment offered was that my RealDrums were too hot. I got carried away, especially with the snare.

Rather than re-mixing one-by-one, can I apply an effect to all the MP3s to remedy this somewhat. All suggestions greatly appreciated.

You cannot adjust the level of individual drums in the RealDrums kit.

You could apply an equalizer somewhere in the chain and tame the upper end where the offending snare resides, but you would also dampen any other instruments in the same frequency range.

If you know what this means, set a small value of Q and hunt for the precise sound of the snare that bothers you. Although a snare hit crosses a lot of frequencies, it depends a lot on the kit and the dynamics used by the player. Perhaps you'll find one that helps. Unfortunately, it could be different for different beats and styles, and players, requiring much attention one-by-one, as you say.

By any chance, is it the shots and pushes in particular that bother you? If so, that can be adjusted somewhat. Write back for more info.

Thanks for the info.

I reviewed some of the offending material and it seems that the RDs rendered to MP3s are a little louder than the RDs in the mix so I'll have to compensate. My brushes were also too loud boosting the drums overall. For one whole day I mixed and rendered to MP3s resulting in ear fatigue. I'll just have to redo them.

Hi Percy, this is always a huge problem when you're trying to mix files at home for playing at a live venue. The equipment and acoustics are completely different. There's two things to try here but they both involve remixing your songs. First, try to duplicate the equipment and acoustics as much as possible at home. Use your PA for mixing not your home studio monitor speakers. That louder snare you're hearing could simply be the PA horns boosting that freq range. Try putting the set up in a bigger room or even your garage where there's cement floors and a bunch of clutter similar to a lot of venues I've worked over the years and then stand back from the speakers during mixing, don't sit right in front of them.

Second, if thats not possible then mix the tracks in stereo with the drums hard panned on one side and everything else hard panned on the other. Then on your gig use a mixer that has panning controls and output one channel hard panned to the left to one channel of your PA and the other channel hard panned to the right to a different channel. If you have a stereo PA then you don't need a separate mixer. Then you can control the volume and EQ of the drums separately and the bass and other instruments are on the other channel. Typically the bass can be a problem in some rooms as well so you can EQ that separately plus adjust the volume.

Not sure if RealBand can do this, but here is what I do in SONAR (could be any editing software that lets you assign individual effects to any single channel in addition to the Main Mix).

On your drums track, add an EQ effects (multi-band with the usual adjustments), then modify the bands of the EQ to tame certain frequencies, attach, etc. That way, you don't modify the other tracks.

I wish I had the skills to do what you and Matt mentioned. As such, I'm regenerating RDs until I get close to what I want.
Some of the fills seemed louder but Peter Gannon suggested an option in another thread. Sometimes I miss the greater control of midi drums.
