'Crepes' is usually how someone in the aristocracy here in the UK expresses surprise...  By the way, I trust you Canadian folks are enjoying the visit of our two youngsters of that ilk this week? The news footage here seems to indicate so, although they were also saying the Quebec leg might not be so rapturous? Oh, and this made me laugh, I'm sure it will you too. I was listening to an amusing American female author on the radio last week who was describing her travels in Australia. She said that as an American she felt oddly at home because many things reminded her of Canada. She went on to describe Australia as "Kind of like Canada in a thong." Oh dear, how to upset two colonies all at once. I'd better duck now.  John

It's my understanding that the Royals are going to take a Canadian warship from Montreal down the St Lawrence River to Quebec City - that could be touchy - British Royalty arriving by warship . . . . sort of reminds one of Wolf's victory over the French at Quebec City in 1759. Good PR . . . not sure.

The difference is, it never got personal. We were able to stick to principles and avoid calling names. We never agreed, but we parted peaceably. We are not friends--we don't know each other well enough--but we are friendly and, I think, share mutual respect.
I do not see that as a possible outcome in this case. I considered responding point by point but realized that I was not dealing with a rational mind. I said what I needed to say there and have set that individual to Ignore.
I realize that I don't always come across well in the cold medium of electronic communications. (Few people do.) In fact, I have significantly compromised myself in at least two corporate situations in which my online words were misinterpreted and used against me. What I have learned from that, mainly, is to remain silent whenever I am in doubt. It is not conducive to open and honest communication, but I get to keep my job.
I didn't think this was that kind of environment. Mostly people here are well mannered and have the sense to recognize when a subject is worth arguing over--which is almost never.
But just to be clear, if I ever have an issue with someone, be assured that that individual will know it. I will call them by name, publicly or privately as I see fit, and have at it, but based on issues, not suppositions or perceived character flaws.
Mostly I'm preachin' to the choir, I know. Why not assume that the other guy means well and keep it civil in the first place? And if you're still fixin' ta shoot, why not parley first? If there are any questions about my intentions, ask.

Dan,
Note that I say in my original post that I will address issues with individuals publicly or privately at my discretion. I did so in this case because the inciting event took place publicly, and because in my opinion the community might benefit from my thoughts.
More to the point, it was my feeling at the time that there could be no benefit whatsoever gained from directly addressing the individual in question. As it turned out, I was wrong, and I am glad for that.

I agree that discussing forum etiquette is useful.. especially when discussed among forum participants (as opposed to enforcement from moderators.) In most cases like this, both parties are good people, and neither intended to offend the other.
There are many reasons why forum communication can go wrong, and most of them are easily avoidable. Discussions like this create new awareness in the whole group of how to avoid throwing gasoline on a very small fire.
Before the thread, there were bad feelings... now there are none. IMO, that justifies the existence of the thread.

Hee Hee. Don't know where she went.
My (Australian) Brother in law and his family spent a year working in Toronto and said that Australia & Canada are chalk & cheese with the exeption of nice people, & their love of sports & beer.
BTW wasn't it John Conley who said that Canadians were only Americans with passports & no guns??

i was born in minnesota to canuck parents from moncton, nb via port arthur, ontario and i have gaggles of kin up in "the nort' woods" so i love my canuck neighbors all, although they talk funny while sober, my irish-canadian kin seldom get that way so i usually can cipher their lingo okay.
is there room in your cyclone shelter for me, keith?

Technically speaking, people from any nation in either North or South America are Americans, just as people from any nation in Europe are Europeans or people from any nation in Asia are Asians.
How the term "American" came to mean specifically a person from the USA is a mystery to me.
So indeed, Canadians ARE Americans

We probably have more guns per capita than the US of Eh.
But they have to be 'long guns'.
We have now a gov't who was elected to scrap the long gun registry.
Actually most of us never registered those, with the belief it would go away.
A hand gun against a bear of wolf is a fool's game.
It's only good for one thing and that can't be good.
The last two cops who died here died because of vehicles, one being buried this Tuesday.
We shan't get into this I think, it's two different ideologies, cultures, and politics.
This is the big difference. So many things are the same, but others are so different as to define us. I bear no ill towards some guy in Splitsville USA needing a handgun in his pocket or under the seat. You don't need one here, unless you hang out at hippity hop bars at 3 a.m. at a speak-easy and deal on some other dude's turf.
We are more apt to pull your shirt over your head and once your are blind pop you a couple of good ones, and then buy you cold beers to settle up. Until the cops got open holsters about 1970 I never saw a handgun, and until now, except on TV never have seen one out of a holster. Good way to be I think.
I love the country to the south of us for what it has done, and I love mine in some cases for what it just is. Leave it at that.
I've now, as of today, lived 60 years and enter the 61'st year. I'm ripe, as in he lived to a ripe old age. The wife just opens the car window.

I loved Toronto when I was there in late 69 -70 . When I got there I flipped a cigarette butt down and everybody looked at me as if I was a criminal ! I quickly grabbed it and put it in my pocket . It was so clean it amazed me .
