Same here jford. About 3 or 4 months ago I restored to a different type of drive. One of my last 250gb Maxtor OS drives was dying, so I figured I would install a 500gb SATA that I had sitting hear as a spare & see if it would work...and it did. Since it was a XP Pro 32bit image I thought for sure that it would need a driver, or that the extra 250gb on the SATA drive would confuse it. But it installed AND used all the space, and booted right up. I was impressed to say the least.

I have new HP computer with a 1TB Sata Hard Drive and, in addition, purchased a 1TB external Seagate Hard Drive. With it came trial software which keeps an up to date version of the C Drive and this enables you to find a corrupted file/Folder and restore to the C Drive or to another designated address. The updating is in background using spare processing capacity. It is called Memeo and I have decided to trial this, but still retain my original security drives in place as backup for backup. internal partition Drive D is used to recover any near fatal problems with the Windows OS in the C Drive but I now have an offline copy of the OS in the form of three DVDs just in case my computer commits suicide.
The speed of processing and the large sized internal drives, has changed my approach to development and security. I have now moved all my development files from an external drive to C Drive relying on the Memeo software to retain immediate copies of all changes..

I have found there are very few programs that have to be installed from hard media (CD or DVD); so I have copied all my applications, updates, upgrades, add-ons, etc, to an external USB hard drive, categorized by type of application, with each application in its own folder. I include any license codes in the folder name, so it's easy to copy/paste when asked for them. I create text files with notes about the application, and I have an index spreadsheet that lists everything, including web links to the application. For applications that want to be installed from media, I just create an ISO image and then use a virtual CD utility to mount the image as if I had the original disk.
I synchronize this USB disk drive to another every so often to keep things up to date and to have a complete backup. So far it's worked very well for me, and it makes re-installs go much quicker.
But it takes time and diligence to do that; once done, however, maintenance is pretty simple.
And of course, I backup my own data to a different external hard drive. In general, if I crash, I might lose at most a little bit of recent email.

Not sure if I asked you this before but what applications do you use to create the ISO image and also the virtual CD Utility? Is the CD utility also ok to mount DVD as well?

I use IMGBURN (free) to create the ISO images. It handles both CDs and DVDs.
I use MagicDisk (from MagicISO) to mount the ISO's. I purchased MagicISO, but MagicDisk is free. I just right click on the ISO file and mount it as a drive letter. I use MagicDisk because it mounts Nero .NRG files, which I use to create images of my audio CDs, You can't create an ISO image of audio CDs, but MagicDisk reads the Nero proprietary format for audio CD images.
