From another thread...

"The new RT's take up 200-400mb for each set since they started using that new Elastique algo. They only need one RT to cover the tempo ranges instead of three. The old sets were 700mb-1.2gigs in size."

This got me thinking......I know, Watch Out!

I am having a heck of a time keeping track of where I read stuff on this forum, but somewhere I read that the new RT's are up to 70% smaller. That got me wondering if they had compressed the wma files more. Tho they sound fine for tracks, they already have a "strange" tone to the upper mid & highs from being compressed format (tho no where near what an mp3 conversion would do!). This is noticeable when mixing in real instruments that you record yourself.

And before that flaming starts, they are FINE! REALLY! They do the job totally fine for what I am doing. If I could afford the Audiophile collection I would, but that is not in the wallet any time soon....

Anyway, the quote above got me thinking that they just removed the un-needed tracks that helped out achieving the various tempos before, and did no more compression on the files...is this correct?

Thanks in advance!!

No. The quality of the wma files is identical. The stretching is better, so the overall sound is better. It is a win-win (65% smaller, and better sound).

Your first and last thoughts are correct. The new Elastique algorithm allowed them to eliminate alternate files that used to be needed for pitch stretching. The total size of the new RealTracks is therefore about 35% of what it used to be.

This change occurred last winter, as of version 2011.

If you are hearing a "strange tone" it is not caused by any changed compression of any single file. I also doubt that the audiophile version would address that. It is possible to hear the difference between the regular and audiophile versions, but only if you have good equipment, a good listening environment and good ears. Even with all that, the difference only starts to become apparent if you are soloing an acoustic guitar or piano, or mixing many tracks in a DAW (noise is additive in a mix).

With version 2011.5, you now have easy control over the tone of each track using the mixer. Play with it a bit.

Also be aware that some soundcards apply their own effects, like EAX from the Soundblaster line. Look for anything like that and turn it off.

Check and see if you have some FX from BOTH your soundcard apps and any DX FX that might be getting loaded within the PG software. In Biab, I believe they call it Realtime Effects? Something like that. It loads in the audio area of FX. Opt/Pref/Audio/Realtime DX ?

Also think about the key you are in, sometims i find that I am at the upper limit of some stretching due to key and tempo.

Thanks for the quick reply Peter, that helps a ton!

And I understand about the artifacts not being that noticeable by itself, that is why I mentioned it in my post.....

"This is noticeable when mixing in real instruments that you record yourself."

What I have been doing is getting a style close to what I want, generating it, then replacing guitar/bass/drums as needed. Side by side with a .wav it is noticeable if you listen for it, even on mid level equipment, but no one will notice unless it is pointed out to them for sure!

As for FX, I use a Delta66 & an OMNI box, so no effects there.

Again, Thanks for the reply's, they helped out a lot!

And 2011.5 sounds like a real nice update, the 70's tracks sound great! I wounder what I can sell.....

PS-Is there a shot of the new mixer in BiaB somewhere that I missed?

A shot of the mixer? There may be others, but here is one shot: http://pgmusic.com/bbwin.new.htm#featurelist

Keep in mind, the mixer can be resized and placed anywhere.

Yeah, that pic doesn't do it justice. That's the instrument view which is certainly useful but the real nice part is the tracks volume view and the EQ view. The other thing is this pic shows the mixer almost square. You can grab the sides and stretch it horizontally and to me at least that looks much better. YMMV. I'm already living in the track volume view 90% of the time. You can easily see exactly what the relationship is between each track to all the other tracks just like any other mixer we've all used for years. Much more intuitive and visual than those little radio buttons. And did I mention faster? To me anyway, much faster. That mixer is the bomb.
