I have to use 800x600 or 1024x768 resolution depending on which PC I'm using. I can't go higher because age is starting to affect my eyesight.

Unfortunately at those resolutions the master volume slider is out of sight to the RHS of the main application window (I can just see about 5 pixels worth of it). Does anyone know if there's a way to resize that portion of the window? I don't see any grab handles or any settings in the prefs.

Luckily, enough of the slider is visible to right click and set the volume numerically so it's not a show stopper but it would be nice if the slider could be move into view.

The only solution is a bigger monitor so you can use a higher resolution and still be able to read it clearly. I just saw a 26" wide screen at Best Buy for $399 I may pull the trigger on that one because my 19" 4 x 3 is now looking a tad small. Around a year ago a 26" was double that price.

I suspect one of the main things driving large monitor sales is old folks with weak eyes. As monitors get bigger, software developers are able to include more stuff in the various windows which still makes things hard to read for someone with weaker eyes so manufactures come out with even bigger monitors so the software guys put more stuff.....etc, etc.

There was a scene in one of the Back to the Future movies where the guys are in a low end crappy future house with a window shade type of TV monitor in a big picture window displaying some tropical beach scene. That would be cool and we're definitely heading that way.

I kind of thought that might be the case Bob. Unfortunately that isn't an option for my main music PC as it's a lappy. Unless, of course, I use a second monitor which, for space reasons, I don't really want to do.

Oh well, I can live with it since I can manipulate the volume by other means.

Thanks for the reply.

Paul:

Try this. Open "prefs" in RB, go to screen #1 ("General") and see if the second to last box ("When resizing....") is checked. If so, uncheck it, and then experiment with expanding and contracting the screen.

I think something has changed in the latest implementations, but it's hard to figure out.

Good luck. (Alternatively, new glasses, but these days, new monitors may actually be cheaper than eyeglasses.)

Maybe worth mentioning; I seen 32" flatscreen TV's for sale at places like KMart for as little as $199, and they have both the monitor connection for standard computer and HDMI for the more modern laptops and home computers. Both connections work well.
The server system I just built has HDMI even though it wasn't mentioned in the original specs when I ordered it!

If 32" isn't big enough it's time for new glasses.

Yes, absolutely.... I just bought a new widescreen HD 32-inch TV from Costco.... $299. Works beautifully as a monitor, and TV when I need one.

I hooked up my new PC to my 50" Sony LCD via HDMI and a window popped up telling me it analyzed my monitor and here is the best resolution. Fine, various videos played great including some HD TV shows I had downloaded but when I opened up a few Windows programs they looked like crap. I know HDTV's have a fixed screen resolution that's why they're so much cheaper than a dedicated computer monitor. My Sony is a 720P not a 1080P so maybe that's it. I did mess around a bit with different resolutions but outside of movies I didn't find any resolution setting that would display a program app well. I know I tried Word and Biab and the text looked terrible. My new PC has the ATI on board HD video chip that has a ATI Control Center software app you can download. The documentation talks about how to greatly improve the video gaming experience and there's pages of highly technical stuff about how to set that up. I downloaded and installed that but haven't put the PC in the living room to try it out. I have no idea how that works but I get the impression it's supposed to create some sort of video overlay or window with it's own resolution separate from the TV's native resolution so programs display properly?

I ask this because I figured getting something like that 32" HDTV would not help with Biab or RB, they're only good for playing movies and games from your PC or laptop. It would be great if they do work with regular program apps because of the price difference.

I can only say RB displays just fine on 32" here with HDMI. Haven't tried BiaB on it. All of windows 7 has worked well here so far. The one I use most is also 720p, but I have used 1080p and did not notice difference.
As you mentioned, it does work very well for video and online TV.

Can't comment on Word, but Powerpoint worked well also a couple times

I don't own anything Sony.
Just noticed; you said 50". That may be a big part of it. I have a 42 that doesn't look bad, but not as nice as the 32. Maybe 50 is worse yet with the screen resolution you are using.

Hmmm, Costco has a 32" Samsung for $339. That would be awesome sitting against the wall behind my studio desk. Looks like it's worth checking out, I can always return it but that store is usually so crowded and difficult to park it would be a total pia but still...

I picked up a brand new 32" Sony Bravia yesterday off Craigslist for $275 and all I can say is it's freakin awesome. The only thing is I wasted about a half hour trying to get HDMI to work but it wouldn't see it so I used the RGB. Who knows what's up with that but I don't care I'm not about to go off on another bug hunt, the RGB connection looks killer. I found the sweet spot for the resolution at 1280x720 and everything including Biab and RB looks great, both programs fill up the screen and my eyes are going, wow. I have no idea why my 50" didn't look so hot except to say I've read that sometimes depending on your configuration (where have we heard that before?) HDMI may not be the best connection. Whatever, this 32" is sweet and I couldn't be happier, it makes my 19" Dell look like a postage stamp. I just want to thank you guys for pointing me in the right direction.

You have to enable the HDMI output in Win7. For me it had to be enabled in both the video and audio areas of Win7...

Glad it's working out for you! I use 1366 X 768 here and it looks great. Not much different than what you said.

Right but since my 50" worked using HDMI it's already enabled isn't it because I played some movies and got both video and sound through the TV? Plus there's the small problem of not being able to see anything in order to change anything since I now have a giant 32" sitting on my desk and the 19" is in the closet...

Yes, now that it's working using RGB I can go in and mess around with HDMI but... My sister is coming in tomorrow, got two gigs this weekend, you know how it goes, maybe later.

You are probably just as well off anyway, who wants to mix their music through the TV speakers? Unless you've got a digital surround system in there too!
If it ain't broke don't fix it.
