OK Here's an update to my Ketron SD 2 story.
My girlfriend bought it for me for christmas on e-bay from a dealer called Italmelodie in Canada. It came up as best price so she bought it.
I attempted to update it( that was a bad decision) and followed the instructions word for word. The unit subsequently broke and I had to send the unit back to Italmusic in Canada, because Ketron USA did not want to help me .They told me Ital Music in Canada deals with ketron directly and the don't want to get involved.
So Italmusic told me the main chip on the cirquitboard got fried during the upgrade procedure and since there is a disclaimer on the ketron.it website I would be responsible for the repair.
They did agree to pay for the labor of installing the new cirquitboard and the shipping back to me but I would be on the hook for 60.- for the parts.
So what can i do,I gave them the goahead and hopefully I'll get the unit back soon.
But here's a new thing.
I'm in the US and got it through Purolator freight which is linked to UPS here in the states.
A couple of weeks ago I received a bill from UPS for 27.- which was approximately what the freight was that Italmusic already collected as part of the purchase.
yesterday I received another bill this time with a late charge so I called Italmusic and was told that these charges are Customs fees and that I would be responsible for those.
I called e-bay customer service to confirm that, because my girlfriend told me there was no disclosure of that fact.E-Bay told me that Italmusic is under no obligation to post that there are customs fees payable by the buyer and that indeed I am on the hook for those fees.
So this has been an alaround bad experience and for whatever it is worth:
Don't buy a Ketron from outside of the US and if you do be aware of the Customs fees.
Be aware that the unit can break during an update and that you might not get much assistance when that happens.
Had I bought it from Mac I probably would be much happier now but at this point I wish I had bought the Roland unit.A little more money but probably a lot less trouble.
