I just went through about an hour of computer hell. I was going through a directory of midi files and they mostly played fine. I'm using my Sonic Cell for midi. Here's some problems:
1. I'm still getting an occasional glitch where the midi drums suddenly stop playing. I'll stop the song for whatever reason and hit play again and no drums. I've reported this before. Usually closing/reopening RB fixes it. This time it didn't. Closing RB and shutting my SC off/on didn't help either. It took a reboot, then the drums are back. This was more serious than what happened before with the midi drums.
2. After the reboot I played a few midi's that were ok then picked a Biab song just for a diversion. I got a Biab error #5 and an access violation, cleared the access violation and got another error saying the style didn't exist. Fine, we've all seen that before but no window to select another style. I tried to close RB but got a window saying it was initializing so I let it sit for several minutes but no help, I still got that box. Did the task manager thing to force a close and it would not close but I noticed the file menu was black so I went there and hit open and could pick a different file, a midi this time and it opened but with another access violation but now at least I could close RB. I reopened it again and it opens with another access violation. Went to close it and got the box about initialization and another access violation. Waited a few more minutes, still would not close. I went around in circles like this a few more times and finally went to Start and did a Restart with RB open. Got a few more error boxes and the system restarted. Here's my final point. After the last reboot I did all this again with the same result and I'm thinking ok I'll just copy RB over from my HD, somethings gotten corrupted with my C drive install. This last time when I went to close down RB I did it by remembering you can right click on the task bar icon and hit close, when I did that RB closed and what do I see on the screen? The style picker window! That was the problem all along, that style picker was stuck behind everything and wouldn't let RB close! Jeeze Louise guys, FIX THAT! I went through this dance three times, rebooted three times, reopened RB a bunch of times, access violations flying around all over the place and the problem is a hidden window that I could not see until I hit close by right clicking the task bar icon. Nothing else I tried would allow me to see that style picker. I was locked out of doing the normal 'hit the x' close because of the initialization error box and trying to force a close using the task manager didn't work either. Looking at what I initially wrote I see that Biab error #5 was trying to tell me the style picker window was open but stuck behind everything else. Well, excuse me for not realizing that. This needs to be addressed.
Somebody can probably test this if you happen to have a Biab song that you downloaded that uses a style you don't have. Try it in Biab first to confirm you don't have the style, then open it in RB and see what happens.
NOW I remember people have posted before about different windows getting trapped behind RB's main screen and causing problems.
Just closing RB and rebooting yet again didn't fix my problem though, I just opened RB again and again it opened with an access violation so I'm going to reboot and copy it over from the HD, all this fun has screwed something up with the C drive install.

The mysterious hidden window. I have only seen this here when a browser was open (and during beta testing to be honest), but I know others say there wasn't one open and it still happened.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

I want to affirm the hidden dialog box problem... It has happened to me many times. (In my case, the browser is never open because my music machine isn't even on online... I typically don't even have 2 apps of any kind running at the same time. )
The problem is made worse by the fact that the error dialogs tend to be modal, so you can't do other tasks (like minimize the main window to see what's underneath) until the modal dialog is dispatched.
The only repeatable difference I could discover between the times the style dialog opened in the foreground and when it opened in the background was this:
if I DOUBLE clicked in the text box that displays the name of the current style, the dialog box would open BEHIND the main window. However, if I SINGLE clicked in that text box, it would open as expected, in the foreground.

Rarely but it happens. It happens enough though that I instinctively hit ALT TAB whenevr I try to open the style picker & it appears it didn't open. It did but is hidden. I've never had the screen hiding except when I have tried to open it.

John - I too have the "hidden"window - usually mine is related to the RT selector - occasionally. As with you, I find the Alt-Tab, brings it out front.
Pat - I too wish PG would make our lives easier by getting rid of the "modal" aspect to error windows, or give priority to a couple of shutdown procedures to override the error and enable a "clear memory" and a program reboot.
I'm still waiting for a Harmonizer fix for 2011.5 RB.
Cheers - Ian
PS - Oh yeh - never a browser on, nor on-line, nor AV when doing music.

I was on build 3 and I forgot about trying Alt-Tab. I did reinstall 2011.5 from the final release version email after the testing and then updated it again to build 3. All is fine now.
Those access violation windows can be very persistant litte buggers, that's for sure. The last time I finally managed to close RB, the access violation box remained and would not close even after RB was itself closed. I confirmed this by checking the Task Manager. Clicking ok did nothing and clicking the x only made it flicker but wouldn't close it. I had to shut down my system. At least my system wasn't locked up, it shut down ok.
This is the only time I've had the hidden window problem and it looks like it's because I opened a Biab song using a style I don't have. Now that I know more about it, I'll try that again later and see what happens.
My sister is visiting this weekend and she's sitting in with the band this Friday so I need to print out some charts. Of course when I have some real work to do with RB as opposed to just messing around this happens. I had yesterday afternoon blocked out for this. Never fails, right?

Yes, if you double click the styles edit control to launch the stylepicker, and it is the first time that you have done this in the session (so that you see a "initializing accompaniment functions yellow label), then the stylepicker dialog opens up behind RealBand. The solution is to alt-tab and get to the dialog, and in the future to single click that styles label (instead of double click). We'll work on a solution that prevents it in the first place. That label is intended for a single click, perhaps the solution will be to make it a double click for everyone.

When this happens all attempts at shutting the prog down cause all sorts of issues. The one thing that does work and clear things is ALT TAB to bring the hidden screen to the front were it can be closed..

or, so you don't sabotage the people who were doing it right, you could just make single click and double click events respond the same way

thanks for reminding me about ALT-TAB... for some reason, that didn't even enter my mind (once I figured out what was happening, I just stopped double clicking and it hasn't happened here since)
correction: AFFIRM above should have been CONFIRM, in case anybody out there is looking up words in the dictionary ;-)

Single clicking the style does open the window on top however I just now tried to open the Biab song that started this in the first place. Here's what I get: A yellow error box in the upper right saying Biab error #5. That goes away after a few seconds and I'm left with a standard error box in the middle of the screen that says "Can't generate BB tracks. Style not found STVEIWSH.STY It's the classic Stevie Wonder song I Wish so I guess someone made a custom style for it. I hit ok to clear the error box and I get this: BBOutput.txt Error #5. I went away in a few seconds so I double clicked the style box and the style picker opened up on top like it should but I get this same error #5 flashing yellow and blue. Again. How many times do I need to see that, this was the third time. Note I said double click. I didn't make a big deal about that in my other posts because I couldn't remember for sure if I did that or not but I'm pretty sure I've been double clicking that style box since day one because we have to double click the key sig that's right next to it. Now I don't know what to say about the single vs double clicking. They both work and no hidden window. I just picked another style and nothing happened except that style now appears in the style box but the song didn't automatically generate like you might expect but I hit the Generate button and that did it. Now I'm confused because I can't duplicate the original problem but I have a question, what's with all those error boxes especially the flashing yellow and blue Error #5 and why doesn't the style picker window simply automatically open if the style is not found and forget all the errors? Or just have a window say "Style not found, do you want to pick another one, Y or N?" Hit N and the File>Open menu appears, hit Y and the style picker window opens. Simple and no error boxes. Bob

Ok, Peter and everybody I'm beginning to get really pissed. The program is becoming almost unusable. Something else I talked about during the beta testing is too many access violations. It happens when I've been using the program steady for maybe a half hour or more. It just did it again, simply playing a midi file. About a third of the way through the song, no generating tracks, no styles, no changing midi in/out, none of that. Simply opening one of my regular midi files and hitting play, bam an access violation. Whats weird is the song continues playing with the violation window in the middle of everything. I clicked it off, the music stops. Then I can resume play and it played to the end with no further violations. I took the tune back to the beginning and this time I get the violation as soon as the music starts. It's no use to try to continue working, just close and reopen. Any ideas what this is all about?
All I can say is this kind of thing is getting old. I really thought it was my old machine that I had for about 6 years and used, abused, done all kinds of crap with. So fine, maybe some weird conflicts going on but nooo, I have my new box now and it's the same crap, different color. RB is not exactly buggy and useless but it has way too many of these random things going on. Mac mentioned it too in another thread, he has to close it down and reopen regularly as well. You may remember I was talking last year about strange things happening in the piano roll window when I do a bunch of edits. It's fine for again about a half hour or so but then I can click on a note to edit and it suddenly jumps 15 or 20 bars ahead. Or, what it just did for the very first time (drum roll please) I clicked on a note in the top window and the bottom window jumped. I don't know where it jumped to because I wasn't focused on it. That's the same thing it was doing with my old PC but of course, only occasionally not often enough to post a bug report. I know I can dig up more of these strange and not immediately reproducible things if I think about it.
I really love this program but sometimes I feel it's still not ready for prime time and I guess this is as good a place as any for my yearly rant:
Where's the VST tempo lock fix so I don't have to open Sonar to use Jamstix??

Been following along here - Just out of curiosity have you reinstalled the 2011 version of RB? To see if any of this takes place? Make a safe copy of the RB directory with the current RB2011.5 problems. The restore RB 2011 build 4 (I think). I did this with my Harmonizer problem (see below) in 2011.5. And it works fine in 2011 RB. If it still acts up in the 2011 version, then it's a real bug with RB. If it's all corrected then the problem is 2011.5. Apologies if you already did this and I missed reading it. Ian

Good suggestion Ian. I have 2011 on my external HD, I see if I get the same error boxes and thing when I try to open that Biab song. As for the other stuff I just talked about, the random access violations, weird things in the piano roll window etc, that's been going on for years.

Yes I have a top of the line I7 brand new with 8 gigs of ram and I am getting this access violations a lot and out of the blue in REAL Band 2011, the software is buggy , I ask here in this forum a few times about but never got a real answer. I was hoping the patches will fix it but I applied all of them and still get this weird access violations out of the blue, which never happens with my other music DAW Sonar X1, I hope Peter Gannon makes a real commitment to solve this issues since RealBand has the potential of becoming a serious platform but until the software code is more stable I'm afraid we will be stuck with these issues, another thing is that you can run Band-in-a-Box and Realband together just with the wrapper but these also seem like a work around these app needs to be re-coded to take advantage of the new 64 bit platforms of today.

Try running Sonar and BiaB at the same time using ASIO .. likely get same problems. That part is the nature of ASIO. It is a priority driver so it is constantly interrupting the processor. Google "ASIO driver problem" and you'll see the 1,750,000 results. It is not a problem only with PGProducts. True ASIO bypasses the Operating System and is allowed to interrupt the processor and disk when it wants to. Ya think this might cause access violations on some systems? Think it would be easy to figure out why?
Try MME for a few days and see if the violations go away .. I am not against ASIO, I use it when I need it and love it when I do, but most people don't understand that it was designed to work with ONE program at a time (since it bypasses the OS), and puts a load on the system with the fast streaming aspect.
Also, the forum is not the correct place to post access violation numbers. They will be meaningless to the rest of us users. They have to do with memory locations and we don't have access to that side of the program. Tell support; it may mean something to the programmers. Also remember to note WHICH program the violation occurred in, not just the number. The title bar of the violation should sy this.

Yes that's the nature of ASIO and up to some level you can manage with the ASIO wrapper and get these two apps to run together but my gripe is with REALBAND 2011 its the only software giving me these access violations, I do not get them with BIAB 2011 or my other apps like SONAR X1, like the last user said there is some buggy code in these app and they go to newer versions without solving these issues, that's what I was referring too, do not get me wrong I like REALBAND but its lack or reliability its what hinders its potential. I firmly believe its code could be improved to deal better with memory management and even become a true 64 bit app and the same for BIAB.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!
With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
