Hi, I`ve installed Windows 7. It seems to lock me out. My user account has Administrator rights, but it doesn`t let me shut down services, I cannot install Firefox, while other Software installs are no problem. I have set the User Acount Controll settings to "Never Notify".
Could it be that Windows 7 sucks???
I`m an experienced XP user, an I`m used to control everything there. I go deep into the registry, always works, no problems. With Windows 7 I can`t even shut down my Antivir.
Help needed urgently!!!

I hate to say it but Windows 7 is way better.
Obviously you are doing something wrong. In that I have learned that the third most used expression I hear is "You are doing IT wrong."
The first expression I hear is "You/we are no doing THAT" Next is "You don't need that."
Now the above 3 things are to live by. Or else.
Those words appear at the engagement party and last a lifetime.
The become stronger as the years go by.
I think you've messed up your windows install and I'd be tempted to do it again if you cannot sort it out.

Try logging in as Administrator and make sure. Not as another account that has administrator rights, nut as main administrator. It'll likely make a difference. Make your changes, and then look closely at the rights of the other account.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

If you are comfortable with it just enable the "Built in Admin Account" This is the REAL admin not just a user with admin priviledges. No UAC at all. Use method #2. Enable hidden Admin

Hmmm...
When you install Windows 7, the initial user you set up is supposed to be the administrator and if you turn UAC off, you can do pretty much anything. I've installed Win7 multiple times on multiple machines and never had that problem.
Did you install an anti-virus software that might be preventing you from doing tasks. Just a thought.
If other apps install fine, but Firefox doesn't, then I would try downloading it again just to make sure the installation file isn't corrupt. Also, if it doesn't install after that try right clicking on the installation file and select "Install as administrator".
Also, be sure to let your computer do all the Windows updates and get yourself to Service Pack 1. Many of us here have found Windows 7 to be pretty rock solid, much the way Windows XP ultimately was (because XP had a pretty rocky start much like Vista did, but we seem to forget that).
Hope it works for you.

I've just turned it off as well and have no issues. I don't run the hidden account but thought she may want to just to see how it goes. Win7 is rock solid. I switched my live rig to Win 7 .

Try logging in as Administrator
How do i do that? When my Computer boots I get to see only my UserAccount (Sandra7) and no option to pick a different one like "Administrator".
And where can I find that "Built in Admin Mode"?

I am now in the REAL Administrator mode. Everything works fine now, except for the Virus scanner, whose servide I cannot shut down. It looks as if it got a built in protection, so that the service can`t be shut down. Thing is, I use the same Antivirus at my XP plattform and I can shut it down there, but not on Win 7. Strange.
Thanks for your help. I think I have to get used to it being used to XP.

Avira Antivirus (a German brand I think) Works perfectly well otherwise. Has done me great service all the last years.

My suggestion is to remove your anti virus program, power off and back on, and see if what did not work before works after. I have found AVG to be a HEINOUS program that blocks a lot of stuff. Trend is right behind it.
A lot of programs that purport themselves to be "anti-virus" also think they are doing you a favor and as a bonus put in firewalls, link scanners, etc.... and there comes a point where there is so much security it is like locking the key inside the safe so you don't lose it.
On the other hand, a reload may be needed like another responder said. Something is wrong with the rights on that account if you don't have free reign to roam the range. The default account is supposed to be uber user as John said.

Ditto Eddie. AVG is good, and MS Essentials is also very good, and also free.
I wouldn't put an antivirus on until I had installed all of my essential programs.

Glad the Administrator account gained more clues for you If you have access to "Avast!" that's another option I often recommend. It updates often, but that's a good thing. Also free for home use. If you use it, go into the options and disable the sound; I have been at friend's houses and burst out laughing when I heard the 'Your Virus database has been updated' announcement during a music session. They never bothered to figger out how to turn it off! If your Antivirus is controlling Win7, I'd want a different one. Maybe for some people it's a good idea to make it 'tamper-proof', but it would drive me nuts. Sounds Like Norton. Easy to install, but next to impossible to remove!

Another pertinent question. When you say Windows "locks you out a lot", do you mean your computer freezes where your mouse won't move, or Windows just stops letting you click you mouse, open applications, documents.....
