If I want say the bass to stay on finger slap bass but want to listen to the piano and change it until I find something I like....will the bass stay on what I set it on while im Choosing a different piano? I'm trying to find a good combination of instruments for a song.

Hi. Try this: In the midi options window, untick Song Patch Changes and Style Patch Changes. Now, any patch change you make for an instrument up top should stick til you change it again, whether you are playing the song or not. When you find the combo you want, do the save Mac described. When you load the song again, make sure the Song Patch Changes is enabled.

Also, can I use a bass patch from one bank like yamaha tyros and say a piano bank from from yamaha s90?

BB has only one midi port, but I suppose you can use two different pieces of hardware if you midi chain and set them properly - ie. each responding only to the desired channel(s). (Per above, you can certainly set a different higher bank for each channel. Not sure whether you can work with two different instrument definitions in the same song, though.)

One caveat: It appears (BB2009, build 282) that once a song is saved with patches, they will override the style patch changes, even if the latter is enabled and the song patch changes is disabled. (In other words, say you've saved a set of patches with the song, but later want to rethink it and let the style patches override. I can't do it, though would appreciate hearing if others can. Gotta be tried with a style that specifies patch changes, of course.) Per a live help session, the PG folks think this may be a bug and are looking into it.
