My gigs are very similar to Deacon43's... I am a Vocalist/Horn/Bass player and I work with a keyboardist in a duo. I have a fully-loaded Fantom x8...and have thought about using it's midi sounds instead of Coyote Forte...
Jazzmammal's comments got my attention... I know it is probably easy, but can you point me to the best way to get BB/RB to use those internal sounds from the X8? Sorry, for the elementary question but I am not well versed in this area...yet....

Thanks!
Ken

Ken,

You may want to start another thread under the topic you are asking about as this one may get lost under the present topic. Just a suggestion.

Deacon,

Take a look at the PG Tutorial Videos on the main PG/Support page on their website. If you are doing cover songs, you will definitely want to know how to use the style picker list and filter, just to get started in finding similar styles of the original artists.

Also watch the "Conductor" video as well. The "conductor" in Biab is specific for using Biab live. The conductor allows you to replay from certain sections of your Biab created song.

Get the basics down on how to layout your song, set up and use part markers, and picking the appropriate Biab style for your backing before learning anything else. Biab is the most powerful software out for creating backing tracks with. It does have a learning curve, but don't get discouraged and ask questions here when you get stuck on something.

I would start by watching the tutorial videos while having Biab up and running trying the same things they are showing on the video.

Once you get the basics down, you will be entering songs in a flash. It all lies in the set up of EACH song.

Welcome to the family

Regarding ease of use, I have gotten to the point where I have used BIAB during jam sessions with other musicians to blow out quick-and-dirty blues and pop arrangements in minutes. This does require solid knowledge of chords and progressions, but using it in this basic manner is really quite easy. It DOES NOT take advanced knowledge of computers to work at this level, only familiarity with the most basic functions of BIAB.

Note that this was all MIDI through a good synth. Getting comparable results with Real Tracks would require at least passing familiarity with the tracks themselves. Otherwise you get that "box o' chocolates" thing happening (which isn't necessarily a bad thing).

I believe that you will find BIAB less daunting if you approach it as a musical instrument. This makes sense, really, when you consider that you are using it to take the place of several musicians. The great news is that you don't have to learn how to play those instruments. You do need to know what they are capable of. Getting REALLY good at BIAB means investing time--a lot of it--in auditioning MIDI Styles and Real Tracks to discover those capabilities. This isn't hard, either; like I said, it just takes time.

I and others will be able to help you with MIDI if you decide to go with BIAB Pro. Others will be better able to assist you should you go with Real Tracks. I hope that you choose to come aboard soon. In any case, welcome to the community.

Richard
