The construction of our heads and how we have self taught ourselves to sung, plays a very important role in how our singing voices sound.

The best starting place is to find a vocal coach who can give you an assessment of the mistakes you are making and if anything can be made to correct them, and how to do that.

I think what's bugging you is called the "formant" - the character of your voice. Vocal coaches can help you alter that but you can't fight the construction of your head, teeth, tongue etc.

Try the coach route first, and then worry about the technical aspects once you've corrected all you can do with what you were given.

John Lennon couldn't stand his voice and did all he could to technically alter it - I liked it the way it was!
