Hi all I'm not sure the question make perfectly sense, anyway. I must sadly confess that my dry recorded singing voice sound boxy, liveless and occassionally as I sing thru my nose. (I guess you can imagine)  This fact have made me analyze the spectrum, and I found that the frequency curve follows a certain pattern regardless of which song I sang. I do quite understand that room acoustic is a big factor as well, and ultimately it depends of what you HEAR, and less what can be SEEN, anyhow just wondered if it would make sense to talk about an ideal vocal frequency curve. Just for the example here's how my frequency curve look like - this is far from being the ideal curve, I can tell you that  (see below)  Obviously you can correct the frequency curve in the mixing process afterwards, which the below image should illustrate. But as known, heavy EQing could cause other artifacts.  How do you deal with frequency issues? // Jan

The construction of our heads and how we have self taught ourselves to sung, plays a very important role in how our singing voices sound. The best starting place is to find a vocal coach who can give you an assessment of the mistakes you are making and if anything can be made to correct them, and how to do that. I think what's bugging you is called the "formant" - the character of your voice. Vocal coaches can help you alter that but you can't fight the construction of your head, teeth, tongue etc. Try the coach route first, and then worry about the technical aspects once you've corrected all you can do with what you were given. John Lennon couldn't stand his voice and did all he could to technically alter it - I liked it the way it was! Cheers - Ian

The most important thing for good vocals is a good voice. Not much can be done about that. Some people just have to realize that they can't sing. Like Ian says. If you're not happy or even if you are go to a voice teacher and let them evaluate your voice. A good coach will be able to tell right away if you have promise.

Many times the boxy sound comes about because you are actually singing in a box - the room you record in.
If you have a condenser mic, their polar pattern is much more sensitive to the sides, all sides, including the ceiling.
I would need to hear your recordings to be able to tell if this is the culprit - it often is. Also, make sure you high-pass your vocals starting with the mic if you have a switch; enable it. Then play around with the cutoff of a high pass filter on your recorded vocals starting at around 100Hz and going up from there until it seems it's just 'thin', then back it off from there.

In the mastering process - I may be wrong on this- but I believe you could talk about a ideal frequency curve, which could be used as a reference curve. Just wondered if the same apply for a vocal frequency curve.

No - that is not the case - there is no ideal frequency curve for voice - if so, most voices would sound quite the same, male and female - and this of course is not the case.
Referring to the Har-Bal program; that program gives one the ability to measure the frequency curve of one song, and apply it to another. This can work but it is not a magic fairy dust that one sprinkles onto a song.
There ARE peaks to avoid. Most mastering software will have some presets which will help in this regard, but the key is still listening to your recordings and following good recording practice; on top of having good vocal technique.
