I really want to get away from dialup. DSL just became available to me. My servive would be with Frontier. It used to be Verizon but Frontier took them over. Their Web site even still has Verizon logos in places.
OK so now the issue. Looking at their requirements it states Windows or Mac. I called support & sales a number of times trying to get info. I keep calling because everytime I get different answers. Yesterday I got an email from tech support saying "yes it'll work with Linux". So I decided to order but when I get to the page to select the equipment the only thing available is a conbo modem/router. I only want a modem because I want to get the LinkSystems WRT54GL which is a router that is meant specifically for Linux. I called back Tech support and this time I get what I think is the REAL answer. "We do not support Linux and do not offer any advice as to the compatibility of our equipment" I'm 99.9% sure that their stuff would work because everytime my neighbor turns on is router my computer picks it up and asks me to enter the security code.
So anyone here using Linux with Frontier?

It should work. They don't want to have to support it, and these type of questions are why. They don't know for sure, and with all the versions of Linux out there they don't want the workload. You know it'll probably work fine already. Once it hits the modem, it doesn't matter if it's verizon, frontier, or att. If the modem works with your version of linux you'll be good to go.

I have cox cable internet here, and they will not support Linux, but it worked great from the get go, and i have never had an issue. The internet service does not know it is linux, it just sees a port. The question is does your linux see that port. That question is answered in a second when you plug in the cable from the modem. My guess is yes. I believe you have Ubuntu, if so when i tried that one it saw my modem with no setup

Listen to Bob. Other than his horrendous taste in beer - and donuts - he knows the score.
Any tech support you need should be from the Ubuntu forums, anyway. Better technical chops and more up-to-date information, specific to your operating system.

Like I said; they don't want to support all the Linux versions out there. I'm surprised they went to this length to do it, but that's their business choice.
Maybe MS has something to do with it behind the scenes, maybe not. You are now armed with what you need to do it. Linux often takes extra effort, but you know you can do all that. Bummer if your service does that in the long run, but once again Linux community is trying to help! I'd ask this question in the forum for the Linux version you are running and see what others say about Frontier. Probably get a lot more applicable hits there than here.

I don't really need support. I'm just concerned that their combo modem/router will not work. I'm sure a straight modem would be fine but can't get one. I'm also afraid I'll get this invalid OS message and won't be able to authorize the service because I didn't install their software. They could do it manually but won't.I just don't want to be out the $

As far as I am aware, as long as you have a modem/router that you can setup under Linux,that's all you need.
I was really impressed the first time I installed Ubuntu (ver 7.10). All I did was install, and it found the network connection and set it up. Since the modem had been installed using Windows, it was already net-ready (password, gateway, etc.). Ubunutu saw all this and got me straight on once I provided the password. My experience is that modem/routers have a URL address and, as long as you have Firefox or equivalent, you'll be able to get to it.
I have been running Ubuntu since 2007 and it always installs easily with the network. Like you, I always check out the different hardware for compatibility.
If you know someone who has the DSL that you talk about, why not ask them if you can try a LiveCD on their computer?

I'm just paranoid. If I take my Ubuntu machine anywhere near a WiFi spot it's connected before the OS even finishes loading. Don't have to do anything. I duel boot this computer with Ubuntu & Windows so I COULD set up the modem/router with Windows and then say good bye.

In my experience, that would work.
These days I operate my system with a Linksys wireless USB that I use to connect to my router (which operates both wirelessly and hard-wired cable). When it came setting up the wireless link to my router, Linksys was very Linux friendly.

They do cause I asked them "how come your servers are all Unix based yet you don't support any Linux distros"answer " I know what you're saying. I personally could support Ubuntu but......."

I wouldn't buy the combo modem/router. Just get the modem from Frontier, then get the router you want and trust.

You miss read. That's what I WANT to do BUT FRONTIER ONLY supplies a combo unit.
I did find the Frontier Forums and there are people using Linux with their stuff.The combo is setup like most using a Browsere app like Firefox. Just plug into the combo with a cable, open the Browser and type in the IP of the combo.Then once at Frontier website enter user name & password. After that just go into the setup screen of the combo via Firefox and set up all the wireless router stuff. All in theory.

Linux guys are used to doing that stuff anyway,right? They don't want to support it because they want the plug-n-play aspect to keep costs down in support.

The one thing everyone seems to be missing out on is the browser, it is that which actually does the connecting, once a connection has been recognised, so if you have any browser installed, Firefox, Opera, or whatever your choice, there shouldn't be a problem with whatever router/modem the ISP provides, it will work.

We have had Verizon/Frontier for going on 18 months now. We have just the modem & the modem-router-wireless combo, and it works fine with Mepis 3.3 & 8.5, Debian 5.05 Live, Open Suse 11.3 Live, Mint, Puppy, and ArtistX, both x32 and x64 versions.....and it was plug & play. I don't use the combo modem any more because I would switch off the wireless, and it would "magically" get switched back on...sometimes in a few min, sometimes the next day, sometimes a few days later. We never changed anything during this time, so I will leave it at that.... I went back to the plain-jane modem & a cheap linksys router and we have never had a problem running 3 systems on it. Now, as for Frontier.....if you do go with the service keep an eye on your ping & speed. We pay for 3mb service, never stayed at that, usually get 2.6, 2.8 on good days. At least 3 times a week we get knocked off for an average of 45min. Our speeds get slower almost every night, clear down to 1.6 for an entire eve.....they know me by first name at tech support! And it is not just me, the entire apt complex & most of the village goes thru the same thing The modems are Westell, 6100G & 7500 combo. Sorry for the book.....

I read about the speed issues also. I can only afford,barely, the 1meg, it would certainly piss me off to be knocked down to dialup speed. I think I'll just keep good old reliable until I REALLY NEED it.
