From the menu, select "Opt, Preferences". Then select the "Notation" tab, then select the "More" button. There you will see a setting called "Duration %". I believe the default is 80%, which means a quarter note will only play 80% the duration of a full quarter note. If you want want to go all the way to the end of the duration, enter 100%, but I believe if the next note is the same note, I don't think you'll hear two distinct notes, just one long one. You might want to set the duration to 98 or 99%; but just experiment with it until you get the results you are looking for. This is where you set the duration for most of your note entry. Once entered, of course, you can right click on a note and set the duration there, as well; however, that would be in number of ticks at that point (which means you'll have to do the math).
