How naive can I be? I actually thought I might get an answer from Microsoft by setting up an account with Windows Live forums and asking a tech support question. But oh no. I'm just going around in circles with them. Here's my original post to them:
Windows Live Mail opens but will not display.
I'm running Win 7 ultimate 64 bit. The pc was running with a couple of websites open along with WLM. no other programs running, just the browser (Firefox) and WLM. I was checking my emails every 30-40 minutes. The last time I went to check, WLM was running in the taskbar as usual but suddenly would not display when I clicked on the name. Everything was running as I left it including WLM. Since then I tried rebooting twice, I tried opening WLM then closing it by Task Manager>Processes>End Process. Nothing helps. It looks like it's opening, I get the box saying the program is opening, I get the swirling icon (old hourglass) saying it's opening but it never displays, it just goes to the taskbar. Task manager>Processes says it's running. Like everybody else, I have several hundred emails stored in various folders in VLM. I don't want to just uninstall/reinstall without knowing those emails will be restored. I can access my emails through Roadrunners online site but only the ones that arrived AFTER I've closed WLM. As soon as WLM opens even though I can't see it, the emails are sucked off Roadrunners server and cannot be accessed.
You guys would get a good laugh from the replys I got. The first few were good. I received instructions how to repair the installation without having to uninstall WLM but that didn't help. The next instruction is how to uninstall/reinstall WLM. Ok, no problem with that either. My problem is how to access and save all my emails that are stored with WLM. They will be lost with the uninstall so my current question is where are these emails stored on my system? The first answer I got was to open WLM go to File and the usual export save routine. That idiot didn't read my question. Another post from me restating the problem and the answer I got is to look in Program Files then the WLM directory. Great, but what's the name of the folder? It's not obvious. For three days I've been asking that question in my thread and three different people have answered me with the same boilerplate answer about how to unstall/reinstall and the last guy named Elmer even said to go online to Roadrunner and make sure all my old emails are there before I uninstall WLM. Hilarious since I've said for several days now I can't do that. The instant I open WLM to test it any current emails are sucked off Roadrunners server. Apparantly that's the default, there's an option in WLM to save a copy on the server but of course I have to open WLM and be able to see it to do that. That means there is no offsite storage right now but those idiots at MS are not bothering to read my posts. See above where I said I tried opening WLM then closing it by using the Task Manager>Processes>End Process? I've been told two times to try that even though I've said clearly I've already tried that too.
My question to the PC experts here is under Win 7, what is the actual name of the folder in the WLM directory that has all my emails and contacts and how to I copy them? Once I do that then I can uninstall this thing and move on.
Trust me as soon as I get this cleared up no more Windows Live Mail.

Bob, I don’t use Windows Live Mail, (and I’ve never known anyone who does), but I did “google” your question: Quote:

Keep in mind that app data is a hidden folder so you will have to use
Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab -> Show hidden files and folders =yes -> Apply -> OK.
Then go after your emails.
Your email files are likely stored in C:\Users\[Your login name]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\

Thanks Bob for looking into it, I tried that too and found conflicting answers just like I'm getting from MS right now. "You don't know anyone who does" use WLM? Gee, I wonder why.
I'll try your suggestion Rob and report back. Maybe if I can see hidden folders one of them says "emails and contacts".

Good luck Bob. I hope you figure out how to fix it. I'm also having weird issues with windows live mail that started the last couple of weeks - not your same issue. I think it's something they've done. I'm so frustrated with them I would change but from what I've researched there's nothing out there that seems much better. Support is a joke.

Good thought Rob, I really thought this might work but alas...here's what I get:
Under Windows Live is one folder that says Mail. In that folder is only one folder that says 'wlmimefilter64.dll'
The next directory is named Windows Mail. There is one folder named 'en-US' then in that folder are two others:
'msoeres.dll.mui' and 'winmail.exe.mui'
That's it and those files I already saw, there are no other hidden files.
One of many things I just love about MS is even though the program is called Windows Live Mail, neither of those directories are called that. No, it just Windows Live or Windows Mail. I've searched for the specific name Windows Live Mail and there isn't one. They can't name the directory properly? Whatever.
That how-to article about changing the properties to an earlier compatibility mode is interesting. I'm tempted to try it but in the last 5 days I have about 20 new emails I need to have access to so I can't open WLM again without losing them off the Roadrunner server and then if it doesn't work I'm back to square one. The few really important ones I've forwarded to my work email at the office. Maybe MS will have a proper answer for me tomorrow but I'm not holding my breath. I used Outlook Express under XP for the last 7 years with not one hiccup. Four months with a brand new machine using the latest and greatest and I get this. I thought the new stuff would be better.
Keep the suggestions coming, someone is bound to find that email storage folder. Thanks,

According to PC magazine: If the Windows Live Mail folder isn't where Bob told you it would be, here's how to find it: In Windows Live Mail, press ALT to bring up the old-fashioned menus and select Tools, then Options. Click the Advanced tab, then the Maintenance button. Click the Store Folder button. And there it is. As long as Windows Live mail opens so that you can get at the menu that should work, but obvioulsy the program has to come up before you can do this. I would guess that since Windows live is a cousin of Outlook express, that the mail storage file is going to be in a PST file. You could try doing a search for files with a PST suffix. There has been a past history of PST files corrupting when they get over 2 GB

MS told how to pull it up from within WLM Keith, but the problem is I can't get it to display. It's only running in Task Manager>Processes. Other than that, you can't tell it's running at all. Hmmm, just had a thought I wonder if there's some keyboard shortcuts that might pull up that folder since the program is running. I'll look into that. I have a gig tonight so I'll try a search for a PST file tomorrow.
A bad sign, no response from MS today. The last thing I asked yesterday morning was simply the name of the folder that has my stuff. I don't think any of those minimum wage kids manning their help desk has a clue about this.

This is a question I have seen before but not sure if there is an answer. However, if there is one I would be looking on general computer help forums. OK I have a vested interest as I am a moderator on this one, but hopefully I will be forgiven in these circumstances, so please register, then ask your question here= http://www.freepchelp.co.uk/forum.phpIf there is an answer, one of the tech guys will know it. Thanks for the tip Cornet Nev. That is a very useful forum and I just posted the problem there. I will be referring people there too.
Jim, no foolish questions with a problem like this. RR probably does have a full webmail service, I've never looked into it. Right now it's just my ISP and WLM is the client. Under that system RR does not keep any copies of the emails, they're all stored in the client but they offer the option to store them if I go into WLM first and tell it to. Of course since I can't go into WLM right now, I'm stuck.

Great call Cornet Nev! Here is the reply I got from RandyL: Quote:
Inside of the C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail directory is the names of the email accounts. They might not be exactly the same names but they are there. Once you locate that folder you will see the different WLM folders inside such as inbox, sent items etc.
Inside of those folders are the email messages. They will have strange names such as 1CD0366B-00000075. Just out of curiosity see what happens if you open one. Maybe the message will open if WLM client does not. Copy and save them.
Also in the C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail directory is the Storage Folders in case you moved any messages there.
Once you reinstall WLM go back to C:\Users\user name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail and copy them back to the appropriate folder. I have moved messages in this way and it works. However I didn't reinstall WLM first but I see no reason why it should not. I just can't gaurantee it personally.
WARNING: Do not delete messages manually from this folder or you might have trouble deleting them from WLM.
As for the Contacts WLM uses the Windows 7 Contacts so you shouldn't have to do anything there but if you want to be safe you can copy that folder to a different location.
This is all I wanted. A bit more clarity before I uninstall WLM and lose everything. You were right Bobflatpicker that is the correct path and that's the same path I got from MS but that's it. No further info and when I'm dealing with something important like this I like to have it spelled out because like the man said in a movie "the possibilities for disaster boggles the mind". We do the same thing here too. Most of us give a detailed answer to technical questions for the same reason not a cryptic one sentence that may be correct but still leaves the user with more questions.
Anyone who has a PC related question go to this forum it's the best one I've seen thus far. It's organized just like this one with many categories and a good search function.

I do, and have done for years.
I have only ever had one problem with it - during an upgrade when, for a week or so, my messages would not be retreived from the server. Other than that, it has always worked quickly and smoothly.
As to the phenomenon of support staff from technical suppliers skimming users' questions and sending out a pre-drafted generic reply which may or may not correspond to the question put, this has been my experience with pretty well all the support services I've ever used. It is in no way specific to MS.
Finally, a good trick when problems arise with WLM is to see if you can access your electronic messaging service using the web-based MS alternative, hotmail.

You're right Marc. My problem is email has been that ubiquitous thing in the background that I've never had to think about for about 10 years. I used Outlook Express with my local ISP and that's it. I never had a need for a web based service, I don't have my phone set up for it although I certainly could. It's like texting. I've texted a few times, mostly when someone tells me on the phone to text them my other phone number or something specific like that but that's it. Like most older folks, I don't see what the big deal is with texting and it's the same with emails. I use emails all the time at work because I have clients all over the country and it's great to be able to have them email me an attachment with their tax stuff in it but my personal emails? Not so much. With Win 7, now I know where they are stored, I just did the reinstall of WLM and it's back. Who knows what caused this, MS said most likely a corrupt file but how did it get corrupted in the first place? I have MS Security Essentials, Malwarebytes, Spybot and Avast and all of them came up clean. Whatever, must be one of those random cosmic rays, I guess.

If you follow the hyperlink about PST files in my earlier post in this thread there is a discussion about that. It prety much has to do with the way MS structured the file. It is just prone to being corrupted. The link also offers some suggestions on how to recover the corrupted file.
