I do, and have done for years.
I have only ever had one problem with it - during an upgrade when, for a week or so, my messages would not be retreived from the server. Other than that, it has always worked quickly and smoothly.

As to the phenomenon of support staff from technical suppliers skimming users' questions and sending out a pre-drafted generic reply which may or may not correspond to the question put, this has been my experience with pretty well all the support services I've ever used. It is in no way specific to MS.

Finally, a good trick when problems arise with WLM is to see if you can access your electronic messaging service using the web-based MS alternative, hotmail.
