Hey! He is only pushing buttons to generate preexisting sound. Do we call this guy a musician?

So, what's the difference from when I sit down in front of my electronic keyboard. I just push buttons to generate a pre-existing sound. In fact, because my keyboard is an Arranger keyboard, it generates a whole bunch of sounds when I just press 3 buttons.

The interface is different, the technique is different, the results are musical. Why doesn't that make him a musician?

Gary

exactly, Gary! The same thing could be said of any midi controller, whether its a keyboard synth, V-drum, guitar synth or even the futuristic imaginary instruments depicted in the animusic videos. Controllers actuate stored sounds. Even acoustic instruments are plucked, tooted, depressed, bowed or whatever to actuate a naturally ocurring resonance.

People have different musical goals. Some people want to actuate the sounds to create part of the mix, others want to create the whole mix, even if it doesn't mean playing all the parts.

But my original observation has nothing to do with resurrecting the "what makes one a musician" thread. I agree that the maschine is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. But I think it is a device that has evolved to a state of unique usefulness within the genre it serves (which, by the way, is not a genre that particularly interests me. My preference is to use technology to accompany my own playing)
