I have been using the "Emerald" style for peaceful orchestral music. But it's only for 3/4 time signature. I've searched the manual, but changing one or all measures in "Edit Bar Settings" seems to have no effect..That is, the measures in this style each advance to the next measure after only 3 beats (skipping over the final beat of 4-beat measures, the way 3/4 works in BB).
I have a song which would really benefit f from a 4/4 "Emerald-sounding" style.
Is there a way to start with a 3/4 style and redesign it into a 4/4 style? What is it that tells BB to skip that 4th beat every measure when a 3/4 style is used? And can this be overridden or reprogrammed in any way?

Not that I know of.
You can force a 4/4 song into a 3/4, and that subtracts the last beat of the style.
However, if the style is written in 3/4 there is nothing you can do to add the fourth beat without editing or re-writing the style itself.

Try switching all bars to 2/4. It might work

I believe at bar 1 press F5 and change to 4/4.
See what happens.

Actually, that's a cool idea, this guy (or gal) has imagination. It does get around the problem of making the song "sound" like a waltz, although the results are somewhat unexpected, relating to losing the 8-beat and 4-beat patterns. Still there are workarounds for that available by editing the style. But probably I'll end up starting up a new style (maybe a blank 4/4 style if they exist) and adding the Emerald patterns in one-by-one. Tedious but it should work, unless the patterns in Emerald are somehow tied in to a 3/4 style in some way. Thanks, everyone, I've got some work to do!

I did a search for "orchestral accompaniment" and found a 4/4 one that might work for you if you change the patches to match Emerald style:
HRPORK44.STY. Orchestral 4/4 with Harp
All MIDI. Quartet.

M50: Slow Strings
EMERALD.STY. Emerald - Slow, peaceful ¾ orchestral

John R., I no longer use MIDI styles so I defer to others about that. I just thought it should be clearly restated that if you wish to have measures of 3/4 and of 4/4 in the same BIAB song, the time signature of the first bar (which could be silent) must be 4/4. Then you use F5 to change the number of beats in subsequent measures as needed.

I opened up Emerald in the StyleMaker, and as I suspected it is written with only 3 beats per measure.
Andrew's suggestion of turning it into a 2/4 style isn't a bad work around, depending on if you like it that way.
Press F5 and change the beats per measure to 2. Then each "cell" of BiaB would be a half measure instead of an entire measure.
It might end up busier than you like, but it's worth a try.
