Hi,
I tried your suggestion about going into the Arrange mode and sending a message using the "Send GM with BB patches" option in the GM menu, or Control+Alt+Q as the hotkey, in BIAB. It did the trick when I first did it (the piano was muted), but when I quit the program, turned off the keyboard for awhile, then repeated the same procedure sometime later, the default piano instrument was still there, along with the other sound from the Thru channel.
