MME causes latency (delay before hearing sound) so I likely switched to ASIO. MME should work, you'll just hear a delay. If you hear nothing at all I'd suspect the setup more than MME. Out of habit I use MME for recording audio and mixing, and use ASIO when trying to play a soft synth or amp simulator in real time.
One thing I have seen support say; in the MIDI devices window select MSWavetable Synth even when using a default DXi. Somehow it solves some issues. I have no idea if it is related, but it jumped into my head just now.. so I'm mentioning it.
You still haven't answered if there IS a default DXi or VSTi synth being used. There should be, at least while testing or troubleshooting this issue.
