Can anybody tell me what this sentence means?
"Don't get your skivvies in a bind"

Thanks,
Sandra

Hi Sandra,

I don't know that particular expression so it probably means it's not Australian

It sounds like a variation of what is commonly used down here which is "Don't get your knickers in a knot". That expression means "don't let yourself get stressed / angry about something" (to the extent that it feels like your underclothes are all twisted up and uncomfortable).

All the best,
Noel

"Don't get your skivvies in a bind" is the same as the American term "Don't get your panties in a wad" and is a crude way of saying "don't get upset over nothing".

Another popular variant:

"Don't get your panties in a bunch."

where "bunch" can be also replaced by "wad" or "knot".

All to mean, as has been said, don't get upset/mad/cranky.

Or, "Relax".

EDIT: Bob said the same thing while I was writing.

Thanks guys. And thanks to Don Gaynor who added the sailors underware factor to it.
Since my Dad wrote me that in an email - and he`s a retired Navyman - that makes sense. (He`s American, but I grew up German speaking).
He told me I had to find out myself what that means and I couldn`t find it on the internet.
But my PG Family always helps out:-)

Don't get your undies in a bundle; we're always here.
Still, even though it may not feel like it, we ARE on the internet. So technically you did find it on the internet.

sandra, there are many words in english that do not indicate a specific gender: workMANSHIP, MANkind; MANHOLE (the heavy metal disc that leads to the sewer); MANNing the lifeboats; MANikin (department store statues aka dummies - not to be confused with "irishMAN, lol). apparently, skivvies is the same word in gerMAN.

I think you'll be stuck as a Journeyman until you get to 1000 posts.

Now if we held a "journeyman" beauty contest I'd say you had the inside track.

I can hear the politically correct movement starting now

It has to be JourneyPERSON

I know it as 'Don't get yer knickers in a knot'.

I wonder where the origin of that came from. I mean if you are cross or mad what would cause the wadding or knotting? I mean you may screw up your shirt or jersey but your underpants or knickers?

My mind throws a speed wobble just tryin' to imagine it!

It originates from a time when men wore knickerbockers. In those days, underpants or shorts etc. were virtually unheard of. This meant that whatever was in there was at the mercy of the coarse woolly tweed, which, due to exertion of some sort would bunch up and wreak havoc on tender parts residing within, causing a marked deterioration in the mood of the wearer/owner.
Thank god for progress.

GerMAN, LOLZ!
You know that we had a change/correction in the German language some while ago, where we added the ending "in" to all the words that used to be in the male form, but referred to a female person. Especially for professions.
i.E.: Until the early 90`s we used to say "Lehrer" which means "teacher" and is the male form. Now we say distinguish between a "Lehrer" and a "Lehrerin" which is a female teacher.
This has lead to some real funny words that don`t make sense, but poilitical correctness rules;-))

So in that sense: Let me be a Journemanin :-))

Using that logic you have to change your name to Sandra Shermanin

Or, Sandra "SHE-man"
Or, Sandra "SherWoman"

How 'bout "Shermaid" (the Mermaid?)

Nope, it would have to be JourneyPerIndividual, because SON is the male offspring.
