We all suffer that issue Eddie! There is nothing wrong with dragging over to Sonar, and mixing there. If RB struggled on my system, i would do that in a heartbeat/ Well maybe Sonar, or Maybe MTS.

"Anybody else old enough to remember how bad 4.0 was?"
Yes, I started on 3.2 on an original IBM 5150....
"It's my thread.... "
OK.....but I will say to check your memory settings or swap out some chips , ya know, like a person who claims to know computers would do....
I have seen you mention that you keep getting memory errors, but no mention of stress testing them or swapping them out. If I have missed that in this whine fest I apologize...
And for the record I have never had a problem out of RB, even when using 2 Delta66 & a 24/96 card in the system....I just don't like it's interface!
Have a great Christmas folks!

Ha, you should be glad it wasn't an Aardvark Q10's ! They folded because of driver problems and came up with a semi-usable one the day before their web site went away. I finally found the driver a year later on a yahoo user group . Even then you had to do a net stop start after using it a few hours and that was another user's idea not shared with the public . The place I worked at ended up giving me one of the two they purchased just to see if I could get it to work. We recorded live performances and it crashed the computer on a regular basis when using two . When I got the driver and took it to work they all thought I was a genius . I was most happy with it when it sold on ebay for a hundred bucks ,cost almost a thousand new.

Well Eddie I actually have reproduced your issue. It's defiantly RB because I'm having the same issue with a different setup. My Audidgy card is capable of 4 pairs of outs. My setup has been to use 3 pairs of outs from the Audidgy & 1 pair from the internal sound card to drive my vocal processor. Works flawlessly. I wanted to use the other pair of outs in the Audidgy so I could have 8 instruments to my mixer & the internal card to still drive the vocalP.Total of 10 outs. No dice. Access violations up the butt.I can set things up to any combination of outs from the 2 soundcards and as long as I don't exceed 8 I'm. Go for 10 no way. Just like you.

Access violations up the butt?!?!?!?
Sounds like a serious issue!
John you may have cracked the case. HHHMMM. I have a M-Audio 24/96 card and a Tascam US800 installed, i might try to setup both tonight and see what happens! That would be 10 outs.

I vote that PG go buy 2 Tascam us800 units right now for $99 and try this out. oops, just checked and the price for the us800 is back up to $250 for now. Just a few days ago it was at $99 again at musician's friend.
There's no cheaper way to get that many outputs. I don't know that two different USB interfaces can be 'live' to the PC - it seems like you'd have to pick one or the other.

So we have pretty much backdoored our way into deducing that it may be the number of outputs exceeding 8 is the issue. That makes sense because the MOTUs are BEAUTIFUL one at a time.
I still love being able to mix on a mixer, which started this whole catfight. Much better control. More experimenting to come, but 2 out of 2 of us who exceed 8 outs in Real band have access violations when doing > 8. NOT specifically the MOTU units, not the interface, not the drivers, not thism not that.... just the number of channels output by Real Band can not exceed 8.

So it's taken 38 days and 6 pages of posts to find this out. The question is was it worth it? At least you have something definite to talk to Support about and they'll probably say "Oh, we've known about that for years, can't be helped...." I still say you would be far better off to just get one of these or a similar unit from Korg or Roland: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/2488neo8 live inputs and 24 track playback/mixing. Life is good for five bills and no more headaches. I paid $600 used for my now antique Akai DPS16 about 4 years ago. Actually, not no more headaches, there's a learning curve on these too but you know what I mean. Bob

Stick with it steady, eddy. You must have the patience up the butt, home of the Cavs, the Browns, and the Injuns. My those Raptors wish all teams were as easy to deal with LOL. Sorry, couldn't help myself. On an other matter I hear you can go out safely tonight. The secret service and some black cars left town.

I can try 8, and I'm pretty sure I did during testing, but I'll try with recent update. Is it 8 or 'more than 8'? I may have to install a secong card to try more than 8 at home right now. But I have them. One here has an 8 input card (10 with SPDIF in now that I think of it)
Give me a bit

That would be quitting. Hackers don't quit.
Until PG sends me an email that says "You have uncovered a bug in our software. Thank you for all your time troubleshooting. We now know we have something to fix." this isn't over. The joy is not taking the car down the 1/4 mile track. The joy is building the engine and tweaking it until it runs the best it can possibly run.
I could buy different gear. I could also hire players to play for me, somebody else to write. That's just not what I do. Nor do I ever format and reload a hard drive as a troubleshooting step. That is the white flag of surrender for a technician. Giving up and buying new would be the same thing. I rode this thing this far, I plan to keep riding. This is NOT going to beat me.

More than 8. Up to 8 works like a charm. As soon as the second box is added... crash.

Something else I need to ask about this whole debate. Does everybody have a clear picture of what I have here? From people making suggestions and recommending hardware, I think the overview is completely lost. Let me try to refocus.
1. I WANT to use Real Band. It composes. Any other software or hardware that requires me to actually play is not going to cut it. I'd spend more time correcting clams than I do at my day job.
2. My interface is NOT a USB piece, there are not 2 sound cards... It is one PCI card with 4 firewire outputs that is made BY MOTU to use with the MOTU boxes. I am not using Bob's card to drive Fred's boxes.
3. Nobody else here is using the hardware I am using. So while I love you all for your "I use this and that and have no problems" posts, that is like telling me how great your Ferrari handles while I drive my Kia Rio. Unless someone else has a MOTU PCIx-424 in their computer driving 2 2408 interfaces, it isn't apples and apples.
4. I am well aware that other hardware would work. However, I already have one mortgage for my house and a $2500 digital mixer is not on my short list. I barely make a living here.
Now specifically, the Tascam mixer than was suggested, I looked at it and don't know what I am looking at. How does it interface with the computer? Can I assign each Real Band track an output so I can mix it one track of RB to one track on the mixer? (That IS, after all, the goal here.) If it is just a 24 track multitrack recorder where I have to play and program drums, etc.... it doesn't help me. I have an 8 track Tascam that I don't use because I don't want to play. I want to write and let RB play. 100% if possible. It never makes mistakes. I do. Lots of them.

FWIW I confirmed >8 outs (10 tested here) gives access violation consistently.. when using MME.
Using ASIO I was able to get 10 with no issue.. that's all I have hooked up for outs right now .. I wasn't able to actually listen to all 10 right now, but the M-Audio mixer displayed all 10 ports working. So I'm pretty sure they were going out the output ports. Access violaions stopped right away. Delta 1010lt, using 8 analog outs and 1 digital (stereo) out, so 10 all together. MME I got errors, ASIO I didn't. The weird part is that I was able to record 10 tracks (on separate ports) at one time using MME, but not play them back on separate ports! Had to switch to ASIO to do that. Input/Output not supported equally.

No, each MOTU has 8 physical connections for analog use, ins and outs. I have 2 of those. As soon as I add that 9th (or more) channel, boom. The PCI card mux's the outs into a firewire cable that goes to the MOTU and demux's to feed 8 outs. (So it is not 8 physical cables from the computer to the MOTUs.) Those 8 outs go to the analog mixer. It's when I add the second firewire cable and second 2408 that it crashes.
I say this assuming everyone knows "mux". Just means multiplexes, gangs (mux) or ungangs (demux) more than one feed to pass it through one cable.

Rob and I got that far when I used ASIO4ALL as the driver. HUGE HOWEVER, though the tracks showed data passing through the MOTUs, there was a ridiculous lag no matter where we set the buffers. So the access violations DID stop when using ASIO4ALL, and setting the output ports in the ASIO control panel, but the music that came out was unusable. And with ANY ASIO driver, ONE track is ungodly overdriven. Amazingly, not the same track being sent to the same location, just one random track.
VERY strange behavior.
Let me say that again for my Canadian friends.
VERY strange behaviour.....
