Hey, like it says I'm an ole dog trying to learn new tricks. Just got BIAB with bells and whistles. Someone told me I needed an interface in order to lay my own tracks into the program. So I bought a Tascam US 800. Having several issues with this, most likely because I don't know what I'm doing. Not even sure if this is the proper forum for this post. The Tascam has to be reinstalled every time I try to use it, cant get anything through it into BIAB or the Cubase software that came with it. I nearly know I am overlooking something real obvious but I dont know what it is. Thinking of sending it back where it came from and trying another route. I'll be grateful for any help.

Dog,
you should probably re-post this on the off-topic forum. More people watch that forum, and it's also the right forum for this question. I know a lot of people here bought that same device, so you should get a response or two. Good luck.

Someone told me you have to turn on the US800 *after* computer boots up (so it gets found). You can't keep it on all the time. If I remember the complaint was it doesn't have an/off switch and has to be plugged in.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I have my US 800 attached to the power strip that the computer is on, and when i power up the strip it is on, and then i turn on the computer it finds the unit.

What is important is that you have FULLY installed the software driver, and most likely gone to Tascam and got the most recent driver for your OS.

I love my US 800 it is clean and simple, but USB interfaces tend to need to be handled the same way.

One other thing to check, re read the instruction that came with the Tascam unit, i believe it tells you a very specific way to install the software. Make absolutely sure you follow the proper sequence.

Also, make sure you plug it into the same USB port every time. The TASCAM manual says you can use all the USB ports, but you have to do an initial install, then go to another port and let the driver re-install, then the next port until you've gone through all the USB ports. Once you do that, you can use it on any of your USB ports.

I gave my review of my recent experiences with my US-800 in another thread - should be showing up simultaneous to this post. I'd like to compare notes with others.

BTW, they are $99 again at Musician's Friend. Even with the hassles of the power on after, somewhat dodgy drivers, still have to say it's a bargain.

I recant what i said, i believe RHarv to be right even if it is his fault! For a while it worked fine, but now i have to turn it on afterwards. I even got a blue screen when i turned it on with RB open. I bought it so that i could have friends over and record at the same time. But when i record by myself i am reverting back to my old trusty M-Audio 24/96 card. Ole reliable never lets me down!

John is right, but installing the driver so it works on every USB port comes with a warning: you can run out of USB ports.

At least on Windows XP, this was a problem (I don't know if it still is in Windows 7). You may think you can't possibly have too many USB devices, but everything you ever plugged in, counts, and if you don't plug it into the same port every time, it adds to the count. The remedy is a convoluted series of steps to go into DOS, view the Device Manager, View Hidden Devices, and remove unused ones. It cannot be fixed from the regular Device Manager in Windows.

Rob -

Check out the Focusrite Saffire 6 USB. I just upgraded from an M-Audio unit, and it's like night and day! Fantastic preamps, stable drivers, and it sounds great.

It's for certain in my setup that the unit has to be powered on after Win7 boots. I also got a reply from TASCAM saying that they have no plans to update the driver for win7 anytime soon.
