John is right, but installing the driver so it works on every USB port comes with a warning: you can run out of USB ports.

At least on Windows XP, this was a problem (I don't know if it still is in Windows 7). You may think you can't possibly have too many USB devices, but everything you ever plugged in, counts, and if you don't plug it into the same port every time, it adds to the count. The remedy is a convoluted series of steps to go into DOS, view the Device Manager, View Hidden Devices, and remove unused ones. It cannot be fixed from the regular Device Manager in Windows.
