working with my midi's in Realband and changing some key's on them ...something weird happens
if i want a song's Root to be say F Major and set it to F in the key change area and hit the play button....it gives me the tonality of A Major

if i choose the key of G Major...it gives me a tonality of B major when i play the midi to check the key
so why is this thing giving me the 3rd of whatever key i choose....

is there a setting someplace i'm missing..anyone else ever have this happen?

It depends on what key your original is. If you wrote in F and want G, you have to remember your base key was C, so when you transpose, you need to go up 2 half steps from C to D in order to move your F song to G. If in that scenario you were to say "transpose to G", it would move your song up a whole 5th because your base key was C even though your chord progression was F, Bb, C, etc....

Count semitones and transpose that way. Think about it is "I want to move this up 2 semitones" rather than "I want to move this to G" and you'll be fine.

What Eddie is referring to, is most users do not change the original Key of C setting when they write a song. So then it becomes a transposing issue.

However I do believe you can change the C to the correct key (and tell RB not to change anything else) so you are at the right starting point, and then make the changes you want from there.
So I suspect from the way you say it's acting, Eddie assumed right, but I wanted to point out it is possible to make it act correctly.

Just recently with 2011.5 I came across something very weird. Has only happened a couple of times and can't put my finger on it.When I do a song in A I set the key to A. I have since transposed a couple of songs and I know how to do this.Say down to G. Everything changes as it should. Save the song. I came back the next day to try the song and it was in G but the music was back in A. I had a heck of a time getting things back. All audio tracks BTW.

Hmmm... first blush is that it didn't save for some silly reason. If you ever do that same process, maybe save it as songnamev2 instead of songname and see if that helps. No clue why it would ever revert that way.

I've been caught by this problem more than once--I'm sorry to say.

Alright i think i've wrapped my mind around this now... and as always thanks for the help guy's....i see how Realband set's up the key structures now i think
it's going to revolve around the C major scale no matter what..

say my midi is in the key of A major and i what it to be in B major

i would move it up 2 semitones in the key signature window in Realband which would be
a D major symbol...which in turn should give my midi a B major tonality now when played..

correct ?

Not really;
When you first hit the key selection button, pay attention to the options; you can set the key to A and tell RB not to change anything. It will change the letter in the box to A.. Now you can start from the correct key. Then you can transpose at will, again paying attention to the options when the key sig window opens; tell it to transpose or not.

It doesn't *always* have to be related to C, *you* just have to set it correctly the first time.

Cajon, you do indeed have your mind wrapped around the mechanics, so in the case of having everything anchored to C, you now know how to do it.
