I am unable to hear the VST effect while monitoring recording just the clean signal. Tried Amplitude, PG reverb and others and no joy. I do have Enable Input Monitoring selected and the VST loaded in the 1st slot. Now when I stop recording and keep take the recorded part is there and if I now play it back I can hear the VST but not when I am actually playing the part. Now if I select Allow Im effects recording and Enable Input monitoring when I play that back it is all distorted and if I now bypass the effect and play back the track it did not record the effect onto the track but just the clean signal..
I tried this on both of my computers with the same result. Computer 1 is win 7 32 bit with M-audio Delta 44 and computer 2 is Core I5 win7 64 bit with a Zoom R16 as the audio interface. Both computers are using their ASIO drivers of course because of the Input Monitoring. Everything works fine in Reaper as I can hear the Amplitude effect while playing. Anyone else care to try out what I am doing?
Thanks
Brian

This is the weird thing. When you choose what VST to use, such as AT3, the very first thing you do is:
1. rt click on an empty track to make it an audio track
2. press the FX button
3. Hit the "track" drop down and scroll all the way to the bottom and choose "input monitoring"
4. Hit the "plugin" drop down and choose AT3
I little strange but that's how it works. Of course you need to use ASIO with the 2 boxes checked as you mention.

Wow a little strange indeed John and thanks for finding that input monitoring all the way down at the bottom of the track drop down list. I was wondering why the output meters in AT3 was not showing anything even though I had Enable input monitoring selected in the Audio Set menu.
I also found out what the distorted sound is after I Record the track with the effect on it using the "Allow IM effects recording" in the Audio set menu. After recording the track it seems you must go back in the Audio Set menu and deselect the "Enable Input Monitoring" and then by pass AT3 and you will hear the real sound of the recorded track with the effect.
Anyway sure seems like a strange way to do this process.
Thanks
Brian

Yes, if you leave the effect on the track, it will indeed put the effect on it again. You'll learn that one really quick <smile> like the rest of us; do it twice and you'll remember the third time.

As for the method; yes it is a little different. It does make sense when thought through; you are selcting the port for that track .. but it could be higher up the list. I'd guess initially it was put there to keep accidents at bay. If someone did it accidently it could be a pain for support. I'd like it more accessible.
You should put these two things on the wishlist. Wishlist Forum is about three floors down.

I think you might be misunderstanding what I am trying to say about the distortion. When I record the track with the effect inserted and the "Allow IM effects recording enabled". Then I remove amplitude out of the insert and just play back the recorded track it is all distorted. It is not until I go into the audio dialog box and unselect the "Allow IM effects recoring" then all this distortion is gone and I hear the recorded track with the effect that was recorded onto the track. In other words the effect is not being used twice.

Oh, I get it now. I hadn't noticed that.

What soundcard?

This part threw me -

You mentioned bypassing the AT3, so I thought that was a clue.

Yes Sorry about that Bob, I am using the Delta 44 on my desktop & a Zoom R16 for my laptop. Both computers do the same thing. I can work around around this by doing what I said but I am wondering if this is really the way it was intended? I just watched the Real Band video by the way and he did not record the effect onto the track like I was doing which is really the way to go if you want to edit the sound further down the road.
I do wish he had clicked on that "enable IM and recorded the effect to the track to see what his result was.

Guys,
I have to humbly disagree with all that's been said.
When you use the "input monitoring" & "allow IM effects for recording" & you've selected "input monitoring" as your track insert:
1.The effect does not need to be disabled. It will not be reapplied. Look at the meters in the plugin
2. IM does not need to be disabled there is no distortion.

Once you've recorded in this manner if you then click the FX button and insert AT3 as a track plugin the effect will now be reapplied.

1. I will agree have tried it both ways did not make a difference
2. I definatly get distortion on 2 seperate systems on playback of that track until I disable the IM

I can tell you why I haven't noticed; I do the same as the guy on the video Brian mentioned.
Quote:

I record dry instead of effected (while using IM), like that video you referenced. Then I use the same effect so I hear it being used during playback (creating the same sound I played thru while recording). I think this method gives more versatility in future sound edits. You can further adjust the effect as the mix progresses.

I agree Bob I always record without any effects.Dry The exception to this is bass. I use the IKM interface and use AT3 in standalone mode. I record the line out of the IKM to the line in of the soundcard. Some people say "keep it digital" my opinion in this case is the output of the IKM Stealth interface IS my dry sound.Think of it as my amp in the studio. I'd always record through an amp.

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
