I used to play on a hand saw but now with AT3 I thought I'd get an electric saw.  As a builder I know all about the good ones for lots of cash. I need just a small one. $200 or less for a small project. So Home Depot sells Ryobi & Lowe's sells Skill. Anyone have experience with either?

I'm a woodworker, John. If the job is pretty small, you could get by with a benchtop model. If you need a bigger table saw, you could get a contractor's saw. I've only had a Delta and it was fine. I now have a Jet, but it's commercial grade with a 52" wing. If you're going to cut hardwood, such as oak or maple, you need a saw with some power or there will be burning. I've had a Skil chop saw that my son now has. It just keeps going and going. I now have an scms 10" makita that works great. Just mentioned that because of the brand. There are lots of saw brands out there now. FWIW

If they weren't so bulky I'd send you one. It'd probably cost me close to the same for shipping as it would for you to get a new one. I have no idea how I ended up with 4 or 5 table saws, but I did. Want one of those big cast iron belt driven Craftsmans? I'd help you move it just to reclaim some space.. I do have 2 small (10") skil tablesaws, and they aren't bad. Both still cut pretty well, but both also have a chunk missing from the plastic base/housing. It was a little thin to be thrown in the back of the truck so many times.
I like Ryobi too though. Don't have their tablesaw, but have 6 or 7 of their other tools and they took quite a beating back when I was building. I think they all still run. I'd give them a look too.
I bet the blade makes more of a difference than brand of saw here.

I totally agree, rharv. That and having adequate power. I've paid $130 for a good blade before. I still use it.

The irony here is that if you are not careful with that table saw you will never make music again.... I lost a fight with a miter saw once that resulted in a 9 stitch cut on the back of my wrist.
Just a little tip for you from your Ol' Uncle Eddie here. The 2 red lines on a miter saw that say "DON'T EVER PUT YOUR HANDS BETWEEN THESE 2 RED LINES" include you. As much as I SWEAR there was a line on page 14 of the manual that said "We don't mean YOU Eddie".....
Held a piece of wood on the table with my hand, pulled down on the blade, 9 stitches later I learned my lesson.

I bought a new Ryobi table saw about 5 years ago, been a very good one. i use almost all ryobi tools, especially the rechargable ones, better prices, decent tools, and the batteries are half of the others. I feel the dewalt, and makita stuff is a tiny bit better, but far more expensive. You can get a double pack or nicad batteries fro ryobi for $59, Makita is $99 each.

I once bought a battery for a pickup truck and a battery for a dewalt cordless drill on the same day. Guess which one cost more. .. that is when I stopped buying dewalt.

when I read the title of the thread, I thought maybe you were going to take samples of the various sawing sounds and make a song with loops of those sounds.

I know it can happen however I was a self employed builder, and had no employees, for 25 years so I do know all the pitfalls. I always had more professional tools. I don't need that now. I have one project I need to make. A small wooden container for my wife's ashes. She's really PO that I still have her in a plastic box.

The $99 Ryobi is nice, the $199 is real nice. Either will build a box. I have been in building for 38 years, and like John i know what a "real" top end saw is like, but hey i only do hobby jobs now and again now days, so a small portable is fine.
Man do you really have to be careful though.

When I am not pulling on guitar strings we are manufacturing Solar Screens and cut a whole lot of aluminum frame. I use a 10" Ryobis in my shop and a little 7.5 inch for on-site adjustments. All have given us remarkable service, in fact the little 7.5" has been wet on several occasions and really takes a beating in transport in the back of a pick-up everyday and it just keeps working. I think I paid under 100.00 for the saw and the portable stand a couple of years ago . . . I am a very satisfied customer.

The saw I wanted that fit all of my needs for now and some future projects ( speaker boxes) was the Ryobi RTS30 I saw at Home Depot. It was $300. A little more then I wanted to pay. I came home and thought I'd look on line for a better price. I found it for $250. Guess where? Home Depot. I went back and showed them and the Manager of the Dept. gave it to me for $250.

Keep your fingers away from the blade. Push 'down' as you push forward (table saws kick up and at you at the back of the blade if the guide pinches or the wood warps from the relief of the cut by binding) Having a piece of wood tossed at you is no fun. I've been hit from across the room when someone else was using the saw. Have fun! Make cool stuff.
