Just bought a new computer and want to transfer BB and real band to it

I bought BB everything pak 2010 on a USB hard drive, and since then have bought all the Upgrades (2010.5, 2011, 2011.5 and 2012) and all the new real tracks

I presume the best way to get BB on the new computer is to install 2010 Everything pak from the USB hard drive. Do I need to do each BB upgrade individually or can I go straight to 2012? And do the real tracks/real drums have to be installed or can I just copy and paste the real tracks/drums folder from my old C:\bb folder to the new computer. It would be very time consuming to install each one individually..

Just wondering the easiest way to do this...

thanks
Mal

The 2012 has everything, it's not just an upgrade (assuming the 2012 is also on the USB Drive). Copying from your PC HD or from the USB Drive shoudl take the same time... no "install" per se... both are simply copying.

I would do a minimal install anyway, just for the fonts and plug-ins which talk to the registry. Otherwise you will not see the fonts, and the plug-ins may not be available. BIAB is VERY portable, but Windoze is Windoze...

IF 2012 is on hard drive, just install it, then do the updates listed in the Support button at top of this page for 2012.
If you only have the full version on the 2010 drive (and the rest were upgrades to it), then I would think you *may* have to do the 2010, then 2011, then 2012 installs/upgrades. It depends on exactly what you have for 2011 and 2012. I believe it was possible to buy the upgrade that only worked if the previous version was installed (ie update price from 2010 to 2011 and from 2011 to 2012).

However, it's worth trying just the 2012 install; if it works you are good to go, if not you'll get a notice that you need a previous version...

I only have 2010 Everything pak on the USB drive. Each 6 months since then have just bought the $99 plus paks so only have 2012 as a plus pak download.
I'll see if 2012 will upgrade from the 2010 though

So can I just copy the Real tracks and Real drums folders from the old computer to the new without doing a reinstall of each one?. Would save a lot of time..

Most likely you'll have to go thru each upgrade as they check for previously installed versions; it's pretty much the only protection implemented at the time with these products ..

I think so, but you'll have to 'Rebuild List' in BiaB and RB to be sure ..

*edit - I like your profile comment: Now prefer to only do jazz gigs and only work about once or twice a week. ...

I'd prefer only working once or twice a week too if I had that option! Congrats

Thanks for your kind words Bob.
Yep still a bit of work here on the Gold Coast but have gone from a 6 piece swing band to solos and duos (and occasionally trios)....hence my using BB for bass and drums on gigs. But I must say the bass player and drummer on RT's are better than most of the guys I was using . Love Neil Swainson's playing now although it took a while to get used to him..

Mal,

Here's what I'd do ...

I'd copy the present bb and Realband directories onto a portable drive. This also gives a full backup of the present programs (I'm a firm believer in backups!).

Once the bb/Realband directories are copied onto the external drive, they can then be copied directly from that to the new computer's hard drive. All that's then required is to run the "bandinabox_realband_2012_full.exe" file that came with the 2012 e-delivery as this will install the necessary font files, etc.

The alternative method is to install 2010 and then all the subsequent updates. Following this, it would be necessary to run the option to remove the +/- files because, as you'd be aware, 2010 used an older audio manipulation engine.

My personal preference is to use the back-up drive approach because USB drives are not too expensive nowadays and it's always a great idea to have a backup of the working programs in their "most up-to-date" entirety.

All the best,
Noel

This topic brings up 2 really good questions.

Is BIAB all in one directory or does it write DLLs into the system32 folder, thus preventing you from just bit for bit copying folders? How about registry keys?

Also, as we get new versions, what do we do with the old ones? When I get my 2012 (thanks again PG for selecting me) am I legally permitted to give my 2011.5 to someone else and they can transfer a license? This will give me 2011, 2011.5 and 2012, and I only need one, given that 2012 will be on a hard drive and I will have it to reinstall if need be.

It's a real conundrum because I want to expose as many people as possible to the program but I also want them to like it enough to buy it and let PG get what is due to them.

I was given a copy on an older version to test it and then bought it, which is how it should be.

Eddie,

I called and asked a couple of years ago because I wanted to give someone an old copy and the answer was no. If you give someone an old version then you must remove all versions you have and forfeit your license. I decided to keep mine and let my friend buy their own.

Some of the above posts are freaking me out a little bit because I didn't think I would have to start with the first version I ever bought to move it when I get a new computer.... Hopefully I'm just reading that wrong. I still have it all but who'd want to have to go through that.

Copying the \bb folder works fine although there are some files that need to be written to the Windows directory. Running the install for BIAB/RB will write the needed files in the Windows directory.

I'd imagine that running Setup from the USB drive and then choosing to leave all Realtracks/Realdrums on the USB drive will also add the correct files to \Windows. It would be necessary to fix the RT/RD paths to the \bb folder when BIAB is run, though.

Yes the license is transferable for full versions. Below is the PG Music license that occurs every time one installs BIAB/RB. I'd imagine that upgrades are not considered full versions. It's easy enough to ask PG Music if this is the case as they'd have a record of all registered purchases.

LICENSE

A. The program may only be used on a single machine.

B. You may transfer the program and license to another party if the other party agrees to accept the terms of this Agreement. If you transfer the program, you must either transfer all copies, whether in printed or machine readable form, to the same party, or, destroy all copies not transferred. This includes all modifications and/or portions of the program merged into other programs.

C. You may receive the program in more than one media. Regardless of the type or size of media you receive, you may install or use the media on a single machine.

D. The program (including any images, “applets,” photographs, animations, video, audio, music, and text incorporated into the program) is owned by PG Music Inc. or its suppliers, and is protected by international copyright laws and international treaty provisions.

As point (B) above indicates the license owner is given the right to transfer the license to another other person. The original owner must pass on the whole package and not keep a copy. (At least that's how I interpret it.)

Regards,
Noel

Noel,

When I get the 2012, do I not get a new license, so if I was to give to 2011 away the license for the 2011 would transfer to the new owner?

No. PG doesn't really give out a license per say.YOU CAN NOT GIVE AWAY OR SELL ANY VERSIONS AT ALL UNLESS YOU GIVE AND SELL EVERYTHING THAT YOU OWN PERTAINING TO BIAB & rb

He'll probably be buying anyway after seeing it work here. I don't know how long it will take him once he gets the basics because he writes prog rock stuff with a lot of tempo changes and adding just one measure of 5 or 7 here and there, so he will have a learning curve here, but it all comes down to how bad you want to learn it.

That's something you need to ask PG Music.

Whenever I install anything PG Music on my system, the "license" for that installation is something that I select "I agree" to before any installation can occur. To my way of thinking, that means that the license is applying uniquely to what I am currently installing and the terms under which I purchased the item I'm currently installing.

I'll try and explain what I mean.

In the PG Music license, it mentions "the program". I've only ever bought one full version of BIAB; all the rest of my purchases have been upgrades or updates. It's important to appreciate that when I've purchased the USB drive upgrade, even though it might have been a fully operational version of the program, I purchased it at a special price that was very clearly labeled as an "upgrade": for example from (say) 2010 to 2010.5. To my mind, this means that "the program" mentioned in PG Music's license is the first version that I bought because "upgrades", by the very definition of the term itself, can only ever be applied to a previously existing version of a program.

If, by comparison, I'd bought a full version of (say) BIAB 2010 and then chose to buy a completely separate full version of BIAB 2012 and not go for the special price labelled "upgrade previous versions of BIAB to 2012", then I'd have two independent and individual full versions. It's important to note that the cost of buying two full versions would be significantly greater than the cost of one full version plus the cost to upgrade it.

You probably read recently on this forum where Pat Marr discussed purchasing a copy of BIAB/RB for his son as a Christmas present. Since Pat's second purchase was for a full version of the program and was not in any way linked to the fact that Pat already had a version of the program, then Pat had two independent versions of BIAB after purchasing his son's present. By giving the second version of the program to his son, he then transferred ownership of that version and its license to his son. This transfer of ownership is in keeping with the terms of the PG Music license.

Please keep in mind that I'm not a lawyer. That's why I said at the outset it's necessary to ask PG Music. When one thinks about Pat's above situation, though, and compares it to the situation of buying at special prices and "upgrading" current versions, I think it's easy to appreciate what PG Music mean by the terms "the program" and "the license".

That's how I see it, anyway

Regards,
Noel

It depends on how you got it. If you could copy folders and that was it, that would be cool. I can't think of a time when I did it that way, as I usually have a recent full install available.
However, I have seen messages during install that my version wasn't recent enough for the version I was trying to install (after replacing a dying drive with a backup) so had to do a sequential at the time. May have just been my B/U drive being too dated.

Thank you rharv. I get what you are saying.

Eddie, I agree with Noel when he says you really should call PG Support and ask them yourself. And imho so should anyone else who is not 100% sure on this issue. It's a phone call.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
