I want to use a violin sound from Garritan GPO (Aria player) as the melody track in an arrangement made by BiaB (FLOYD.STY, i.e. all Midi but Realdrums). However, Garritan uses the mod wheel to change volume, which causes the melody to silence (is that a verb?; i mean it shuts up) as soon as I start to play.
Anyone knows a workaround?
Best regards

This is a problem for me as well. Every press of the 'play' button resets the modwheel to zero and the app goes silent until it is turned back up. Not sure who will address this... PG Music or Garritan ?

I bought 2 Garritan products from PG Music, so one would think that they would have been aware of this issue ?

One way to get around this is to add a Mod-wheel Controller event to the beginning of the Melody or Soloist track.
1. Open the notation window, and open the Event List by clicking on the [#] button.
2. Click [Insert], choose "Control Change", click OK.
3. Next to "Controllor", choose "1 Modulation Wheel".
4. Make sure the Channel number is correct (e.g. if you are trying to use the Strings track the default channel # would be 7)
5. Set "Value" to the Velocity of the Mod-wheel (e.g. 127 is full)
Now at the beginning of the song the Mod-wheel should get reset to this value.

Open up the notation editor, select the melody track, and press # sign. This opens the Event Editor. Click on Insert and insert a CC #1 at 1,1,0 with a relative value for the volume you want. Garritan will respond to velocity, but within the volume setting you specify. You can specify a setting of zero to 127.
Next time you hit play, you should see the mod wheel on the Garritan display automatically pop up to the value you set.
I just noticed that PGMusic includes Aftertouch as an insert option of the Event List, so I'm now going to have to explore that further to get Vibrato to work.
It would be nice if PGMusic had an option to specify that you are using Garritan instruments and made the appropriate changes automatically.
Let us know how it works for you.

Thanks Blake ! In Real Band, is the process the same ? Does this only work on the Melody / Soloist tracks ? I have a complete Beethoven midi piece w/ 16 tracks. How would I apply this to all of them ?
What is the number associated with the Modwheel ? In RB, in the Control Change dialog, it needs:
Channel Time Controller (numeric value) Level
Thanks.

Thank you so much for your help.
Blake, Unfortunately, I do something wrong. When I open the Notation (sheet) window and have melody marked, I only see midi changes on channel 1. Changing channel 4 has no effect. It seems like the melody uses the mod wheel on severeal spots in the song. It goes to zero even though I try to manually put it at 127 in the aria.
Jford, You are too much of a vetaran for me. I don't understand where and how to insert a CC #1 at 1,1,0 with a relative value.
Sorry for my igonorence. I do appreciate your effort.
Best regards

I think Blake and I said the same thing.
If there are multiple mod wheel movements in your melody, then that conroller is probably already embedded in the MIDI file.
Garritan has great sounds, but it may or may not work exactly with existing MIDI. It uses the mod wheel differently than other MIDI sound engines do. I don't know why, but it is that way.
If you could post a copy of your file somewhere on the web and point us to it, we could take a look at it and try to figure out what's going on.

Thanks,
I understand that there is mod wheel information in my melody track, in several places. It was obvious when I looked in the Midi monitor in BiaB. I saved the file as a midi file and opened it in Sibelius, where I'm comfortable in working.
Thanks again
Lennart

Hi there, I'm not sure that this is an "issue" from BB, I rather think that, that is the way Garritan products works. I don't have the full version of the Jazz Band from Garritan, but I do have the limited version that comes with Sony Acid Pro 7 and indeed have nice sounds, and except for the piano, and vibes, any other instrument (or at least as far as I know) uses the mod wheel to control the volume. I think that's because the software is mainly intended to be use with a midi keyboard controller (hence the mod wheel)rather than by a midi sequencer. What I discover though, is that once you have the melody the way you wanted and go thru the annoyance of having to manually crank up the mod wheel in the Aria player to preview it(unless you want to mess with the cc# sends to fix that in a particular song)you can drag and drop the midi onto any sequencer you are using while converting it to an audio file making sure that the melody or solo volume is at 127 level in BB, it would make the audio file with the volume assigned on BB and everything is fine. At least it has worked for me. I though I throw in my two cents on this one.

I was about to say essentially what Cubanpete just said but not sure we are in total sync on the why. But the why is immaterial (and as usual my thoughts on the "why" are probably wrong anyway). However, I suspect the real reasoning behind CC1 is a little more straightforward (later). The following link is typical of what I've found doing a quick and dirty web search on topic of Garrtian's libraries and use of Mod Wheel (aka CC1). http://www.finalemusic.com/UserManuals/Finale2012Mac/Content/Finale/GPOHP_Controllers.htmThere is no reason that the ARIA PLAYER could not have a additional "wheel": one wheel for MODULATION and one for actual, albeit "ignorant," volume. Actually I'd suggest that a THIRD wheel be added ("it's just SW" right?) and this would then allow the Mod wheel (CC 1) to revert back to MODULATION duties(e.g., tremolo=vol modulation, vibrato = pitch modulation, I felt I had to explain those terms for the Fender amp lovers out there), allow one wheel/slider for volume and finally, but importantly to Mr. Garritan, "expressiveness" (aka CC 11). The reason I suggest CC 11 is the use of the word "expression" or phrases like "expressiveness" in every instance of explanations of how Garritan libraries should be used that I've been able to find in the last hour or so of looking. Hence, I'm surprised at his use and selection of CC 1 and NOT CC 11 as the default. But I suspect in reality it is because a majority of the time a keyboard/controller will have a hardware built-in "Mod Wheel" but NOT a hardware built-in "Expression" wheel (you'd have to actually supply that yourself usually as floor pedal) Now if Mr. Garritan just read these posts here ... my much less than 2 cents worth Larry
