Hey

I'm looking for a Tower of Power type style. I've scrolled down the list of all the styles and couldn't see any in the Style Set descriptions. Does anyone know if there are any available?

Cheers

Paul

Your best bet is get a tower or power midi, bring that into band in a box and use that as a template... It's not going to be the same as creating a dedicated style from scratch, but if you truly can't find anything in the collection of biab styles, that would be a way to go...

I created one some time ago by combining elements from a few different styles, but unfortunately the file is lost along with some others. It takes a while, but demoing various styles and identifying what you want from each one and then mixing them into a new or edited style is another approach.

Thanks for the advice.

I did exactly what you said tradivero1 in the days when I had a PC - but I've been on MAC for nearly 10 years ago (shows you how long ago it was). Unfortunately you can't make styles from Midi files in Mac 12 - won't open that can of words - I think i'm either gonna have to buy a PC to run BIAB or run my laptop in bootcamp and then get BIAB 2009.

Thanks anyway.

Paul

PS if I get one made is there a place here where we can share them??? So if anyone ever needs it they can just download it, or is that frowned upon. I'm fairly new here, not sure of the protocol?

I'm a huge fan of TOP but trying to create a style that would sound even remotely like them would be a very difficult, I think. If you ever find or create one please let me know. I have a decent midi file of What is Hip, if you would like it PM me. My favorite is Squib Cakes but I've not found a midi file of that one yet. What synth you use for the instruments is critical. A basic cheapo synth like the VSC won't cut it especially for the horns and drums. There's no Real Drums that are even close to their style and this midi file has a pretty good drum track but you need a good drum module to make it sound like it should. I have Jamstix but there's many others including a freebie called the DR5 that sounds decent.

Hey Bob

I think the style I made from was with a midi file of Only So Much Oil. And my memory (maybe rose tinted?) is that it was pretty freaking good.

If I did it now, I think I would export the song as midi into a DAW like Logic and replace the drums with Dave Garibaldi loops (there's a full CD's worth on a package he did called TOWER OF FUNK, it ain't cheap, $99, but there's some amazing licks in there. Plus there's some loops from his book THE CODE OF FUNK).

It's definitely something I'm going to do in the next 3 months. SO feel free to PM me from time to time - or email me from my website, link is in the signature - and check whether I've done it and forgotten to post about it.

Cheers

Paul

PS any news on when their AMERICAN SOUL BOOK CD is gonna hit the shelves?

I bet those Garibaldi loops are pretty hot. If you find that style, I definitely would like to have it. I know it's certainly possible to create a song specific Biab style, Notes Norton does it all the time. The only problem with Biab for something like that is the one midi output port. Very restrictive because all the instruments have to be from one synth. A DAW using a good midi file is much better because you can use multiple synths plus those loops. The cool thing about Real Band is you can easily combine both a Biab style and midi/audio tracks.
As to where you can share styles, there's a Yahoo Biab group plus you can google a lot of styles too. There also Alannah's site, she's a member here and has literally thousands of Biab and midi files. If you're into TOP type stuff though, she may have a few but probably not too many.

Hey Bob

Thanks for that.

I'll check Alannah's site out. Read about it in another couple of posts.

Yeah the Garabaldi loops are cool, great to play along with. So it will be cool to incorporate them into fuller tracks with chords and stuff on. If I find the one I made back in the day I'll let you know - now we've started talking about it, it's made me want to check it out again.

I'll see if I can make some time monday.

Keep ya posted.

As I said in my post, I managed to do it some time back but lost the file and cannot recall all the specifics. And it took more than just a style edit, admittedly-- I used a lot of chorus on instruments, exported the BiaB result to a midi file and did a lot of the ToP work in a midi editor with layering and postprocessing. I was very pleased with the result but not pleased at all that my hard drive crashed afterward and lost the work...
