As Bob Dylan sang, times are a changin. And so it has with modern desktop PCs. The old PCs had round midi ports to connect you r midi cable from your electronic keyboard to midi in on your PC.Those round ports have been replaced with USB ports. So what is the problem? Most electronic keyboards STILL have the round midi ports, so it still only takes a roumd midi cable end. This leaves you dead in the water. Because you can't connect the end of that same cable to your PC with the other end of that midi cable because that is ALSO round. So do they sell inexpensive keyboards now with usb midi in and out ports that are USB? That is my question

It's possible to get a MIDI to USB adaptor. For an example, see the link below.

You asked where have I been all this time? Playing my homespun guitar to BIAB since 2006 I guess. So I really never used a Yamha or Casio keyboard. Anyway, so they have adaptors, which is good, but what is a good MINI SIZE keyboard brand to purchaase that I can set right up on my desk in front of my monitor?

Why?

I have lots of keyboards.

I send the output of band in a box to a mixer.

I send my keyboards to the mixer.

I mix.

The mixer hooks via usb to the computer.

I do have the gizmo spoken about, that's to get the midi from my computer (band in a boite) to the Ketron SD2 or my JV1010. Then they go to the mixer.

In my thinking you are better to get a mixer like a small Behringer.

I'd get both, but I find that playing through the computer is a pain in the a%% and I am somewhat of a higher end pianist, done lots of fancy spots solo, hotel lobbies are my favorite, but that's a dead end gig now.

I wonder if you may have the same problems I have had with my midi controller keyboard. It has the USB connector and worked beautifully for adding melodies to my BIAB songs as long as I used XP. When I got my new computer with Windows 7, then nothing worked right. I have never been able to sync the controller with BIAB even after downloading the latest drivers from the manufacturer. The tone always comes in a few ticks too late amd there is no way to adjust the latency with the VST synth as it it set automatically by the program. Was thinking of going back to using my regular keyboard by using this converter device but then I noticed that it did not say it would work for Win 7. It states specifically that it works for XP, Vista and ETC. but it did not state that it would work for Win 7. Has anyone had experience using this converter with WIN 7?

how many keys would you like 48 60 76 88
do you want to hear sound from the keyboard (cassio & yamaha have been good to me)

use the keyboard to play virtual sounds from the computer (midi controller "m-audio")

or both (cassio & yamaha have been good to me)

search these sites for product

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/keyboards-midi

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Keyboards---MIDI.gc

make sure you get the proper cable to comment the keyboard the the computer

have you tried ASIO drivers

from the faq

Why is there a delay (latency) between when I play a note on my MIDI keyboard, and when I hear the note play through my computer speakers?
http://www.pgmusic.com/techfaq21.htm#12

scroll down untill you see
You might be using a DXi or VSTi software synth with an 'MME' audio driver.

Thanks for your response and suggestions. I had used ASIO with my XP and it worked fine but not with the Win 7. But I went and checked again after your response and saw that there was a newer version out and downloaded it. I checked out a video from FL Studio about troubleshooting ASIO for Win 7 and tried changing a sound setting and it worked "right off the bat" just like it had in XP. How grateful I am to you for again directing my attention to ASIO.

Would still like to know though if that USB Converter will work with my WIN7 so if anybody has tried it with WIN 7, would love to hear from you.

If Win7 is not mentioned then it probably won't work and there is no guarantee that you will be able to get a Win7 driver. My first midi/usb converter (not the model listed above) worked fine with XP but cannot be made to work with Win7. There are lots of these converters around so just get one that specifically mentions Win7.

Had posted a response earlier in the evening but somehow it just disappeared. Will try again.

The converter that I was asking about was the one that was mentioned earlier in this thread.

http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Converter-Music-Keyboard-Window/dp/B0017H4EBG

I don't have a link for the video. I had done a google search for Asio4all for Win 7 and this showed up in a list.

I was so excited that I had gotten it to work that I thought it was a permanent solution but after I turned off the computer and then turned it back on again I find that I would have to reset this each time I wanted to use ASIO (not really so good) What I had done was go into control panel and click on "Hardware and Sound" then under "audio sound managment" I enabled the headphone jack and put a dummy plug in it. Then I went back and enabled ASIO and set it up in Options" in BIAB. Disabled, Microsoft GS Output and voila my controller was working and I could play along with BIAB with almost no latency. However as I stated this is not a permanent solution because it has to be reset everytime you want to use the controller. It's just a "work around".
The guy in the video says that this problem was caused by change the designers of WIN7 made in making the soundcard only accept one input and one output and when it's in use by another device you get no sound. Hope this helps...I will continue looking for a more permanent solution.

from realband 2011.5 manual

Support for using ASIO with multiple programs at once.

Previously, if you were using an ASIO driver
(so that you have low latency), you could only use ASIO with one program at a time. Now you can use
multiple programs at once with ASIO - for example RealBand and Band-in-a-Box at the same time. This
requires using the Steinberg® ASIO Multi-Client Wrapper, which you can download here:

ftp://ftp.steinberg.net/Download/Hardware/ASIO_multiclient_driver/

To get this function working:
1. install the ASIO Multi-Client-Wrapper
2. Run the ASIO Multi Server, and select your ASIO Driver (e.g. ASIO4ALL). The ASIO Server is
a program located in “C:\Program Files (x86)\vidance\asiomulti\asioserver.exe”
3. Run RealBand, and choose Prefs-Audio-Driver Type ASIO, and then select ASIO Multi-Client
Wrapper” as your ASIO driver.

Note: that you may have to reboot your PC after you have installed any new ASIO Drivers.
The steps above need only be done once. The next time you run RealBand, things will already be setup.

I must have done something wrong! I followed all the instructions step by step and then I had no sound at all. Printed out all the instructions to make sure I did everything right. Had to go back and undo all the ASIO stuff to get any sound at all. I am so tired and frustrated that I think I will just go to bed and try again tomorrow. Thanks for the information though. I will go back to the Steinberg site tomorrow and see what I can find out.
I still have XP on my old laptop and think I will fire it up and transfer all my BAIB stuff to it and stop trying to do the seemingly impossible. I can go back to using Roland VSC which had the greatest guitar sounds and I won't have redo all the songs that I had used the Jazz guitar for my melodies. The jazz guitar on Coyote Forte DXI sounds like a toybox plunker. I have the Hard drive version of BIAB so it won't be that much of a problem. Must find a duplex connector for my cable internet so I can use it online. I hate having to unplug the HP with
WIN 7 everytime I want to download something onto the laptop. Anyone have any suggestions where one might be available?

Like John Conley above I gave up on soft synths a long time ago. The hassle of struggling with drivers and latency, not to mention sound quality and XP versus Win7 just isn't worth it. Get a small sound module like a JV1010 (they are dirt cheap) or a SD50 and a small mixer. Mix the computer Realtrack audio with the midi audio from the module and all your problems are over.

Amen to problems all over. ASIO, if you really can play like Rachmoninoff, or Glen Gould, and have a masterpiece ready to go, it is probably worth the trouble to get perfect sheet music. Of course that won't happen here.

Entering anything into Band in a Box as a melody is a foolhardy exercise IN MY MIND. Note the latter disclaimer. I think I 'm a pretty good guy on keys BUT, I've never entered much that's meaningful into a computer via a keyboard. It's faster to use a mouse.

It's partially my fault for throwing in trills, embellishments, little runs and things that are too fast for Band in a Box's notation.

That said, the software is to provide the backing band, not be the engraver of perfect sheet music for the Boston Philharmonic, or the Nights of Pythias Concert Band of Primarysville, Iowa.

Oh and my perfect timing goes away every time I record. All other times, it's perfect. As soon as I hit the record button, I'm coming in early, late, and on the wrong measure.

I think that's how it works.

My wife says I'm always messing up /late/early, dynamics etc.

Thanks Tony and Mike for your help and John Conley, I love your sense of humor! I already have a small Behringer mixer packed away in my gig case, from my days of doing public performances, and a pretty good sounding keyboard so I will just eliminate the problem of latency by using that setup. Why didn't I think of that? Could have saved myself hours of work and grief but I guess that is what I came here for, to learn how to enjoy music without all the hassles. Thanks again everybody!
