I am new to Real Band. I previously had power tracks 8 but haven't used it in a long time, just got frustrated trying to get my keyboard ( yamaha motif88) to work with it. What I like to do is record tracks myself using different instruments on each track, then burn the music to cd etc. I recorded a song in real band and tried to add a style, the data showed up on the track I put it on but there was no sound on that track. I used my yamaha midi drivers (keyboard connects through usb) The sound comes out through my stereo speakers. My question is why is there no sound on the style I added. Also when i am biab I get the error message: Audio and/or DXI output will be silent. THe aSIo4all driver is not connected, likely due to your using a soft-synth ( like GS-wavetable) for midi ...reboot windows if persists." As long as the keyboard is connected the sound comes through my stereo but if it isn't then there is no sound. I am confused as to what I need to do. THanks Glenda
Windows 7, yamaha motif8 keyboard. Biab and rb 2012.

Glenda, It appears that the keyboard is making the sounds. When you record midi only tracks to realband, no sound is actually being recorded, just the MIDI data. MIDI data is like the keystrokes used in a word document, with specifics about which font to use, what margins should be there, etc. The Word document itself is not an image of the printed version of the document. It is a collection of keystrokes and commands, than when assembled, show an image on the screen of what you want to read or print. When you print it, then it's all converted into a format that you can hold in your hand. Right now, all that is being recorded in Realband is the same kind of thing as the keystrokes in a word document. You have to use something to actually 'print' the keystrokes into sound. At present, your Yamaha keyboard is doing that task, converting the MIDI data coming out of Realband, into actual sounds. What Realband is cryptically trying to tell you is that in order for the sounds to be present inside the PC by itself, it needs something to convert the keystrokes into sound. That's where the 'GS-wavetable' comment comes from. That's an internal synthesizer that can do that job. There are all kinds of options to make this work. Perhaps the best for you is to record the actual AUDIO output of the Yamaha keyboard into individual AUDIO tracks. Then you have recorded waveforms to deal with and not just the midi notes, velocities, and so forth. Here's a very nice set of articles on how MIDI actually functions. http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/midi.htmIt would be worth your while to see if you can wrap your head around some of the concepts in the article. -Scott

MIDI can be confusing. When MIDI (often used in a style) is used it is only the information for which note to play, when to play it, for how long, etc. There is actually no sound. Right now your yammie is taking that MIDI information and making it a sound. If you want to use those sounds in Realband you will have to connect the audio (Line Out) of your keyboard to the computer and record them as an Audiio track.
If you just want to hear the MIDI tracks from the computer you can assign the GS Wavetable Synth as the MIDI Output device (and click 'move selected device to top) to make it the MIDI sound source. Or you could click the "Reroute all MIDI to DXi synth" box and use a different software synth. Either of these last two choices will likely not sound as good as the Yamaha, so you may want to just record the Yamaha to Audio tracks and use those sounds. I would. So connect the MIDI Out to the Yamaha (so RB can tell it what notes to play) And connect the Line Out of the Yamaha to the Line In of the computer (so RB can record the sound) Record the MIDI to audio tracks.
If you want to record one instrument sound at a time you may need to mute the other MIDI tracks in RB so only one instrument gets recorded to each new audio track at a time. This is how I would do it; record each instrument from the Yamaha to it's own audio track in Realband. It'll make things easier later when you mix down, or decide to change one instrument during a section, etc..
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

Thank you. Right now my Yamaha connects with USB. I was told this this the best and easiest way. Are you suggesting another way of connecting the keyboard to the computer? If I am understanding and trust me I am a novice lol, that ther are two ways of hearing the sounds from biab and rb. One way is lyle way I have it connected now using my yamaha. The other way is using the sound card that is in my computer. That is what I don't know how to configure or use. Thank you for your reply. Glenda

Do you have a mixer (which would allow hearing both at once) If not, it should be your first investment, or you can record the Yamaha back in as audio, as described above, and then use the computer to monitor through.
The USB connection only carries MIDI data to the Yamaha, telling it which notes to play, when to play them, for how long, etc (again; MIDI is not sound, the Yamaha makes the actual sound)
You still have to get the audio (sound) from the Yamaha back to the computer..
You have a situation where you can A. Use computer for MIDI sounds and Audio sounds (of which realtracks will be audio). You would not using Yamaha at all this way
B. You can use a mixer to hear the Yamaha and the computer at the same time.
C. You connect the system like I suggested; Midi (USB in your case) going out of computer to the Yamah so it creates the MIDI sounds, and an audio cable going from the Line Out of the Yamaha back into the Line IN of the computer so you can 'hear' the Yamaha sounds through the computer.
Using C. what happens is you hit 'Play' and Realband will send the MIDI data to the Yamaha whch in turn creates a sound.. then that sound is routed back to the computer through the aforementioned audio cables (Line Out/In) so you can hear it. This is the cheapest way to accomplish what you need. Question is - what do you hear the sound from the computer through? Speakers? Headphones?
