Hi, I'm new to RealBand, so maybe I'm missing something obvious. I have two midi "tracks" that represent the recording of two different VST instruments via midi keyboard. Each has a midi data track and an audio track. (I told RB to save an audio track as I was given the option at recording time.) When I play the recording back in RealBand it sounds fine with the correct instruments. However, if I try to render the project to a .wav file, there are problems -- it doesn't sound at all like the project(default VST sound, weird rhythms, etc.) I've tried many combinations of midi track and audio track selection as well as saving directly to a .wav vs. merging audio and dxi files, etc.

Can anybody tell me what I might be doing wrong? Should I select all midi and audio channels? There must be something I'm missing. (Also I don't see any obvious way to select the time range on a track, so I'm basing this on just highlighting the tracks.)

Thanks.

Selecting range is by either highliting a a section (then selecting the tracks) or by using the From-Thru in upper right menu.

I'm not clear on the issue from your post;
Does the sound change from when you 'play' it to when youe 'render' it (which is done from Merge DXi and Audio to stereo wave file in the Audio menu)

If so, then I think you are not using a DXi synth during playback. Check MIDI Devices section and see if 'Reroute all MIDI to DXi synth' is enabled.
Then make sure you have your best synth selected as the device in the dropdown.

And, all though it seems like it shouldn't matter, in the top box (MIDI input driver) select the GS Wavetable synth and then 'move selected device to top' button (making sure it is the only one highlited). This has helped on some systems.. no idea why, but support says it is something to try.

Hi -- thanks for the response. Yes, the sound changes to the VST's default sound for midi channel 1 when I try to "Export to wave file." If I try to "Merge audio and DXi tracks to stereo wave file" then the sounds themselves are intact, but the rhythms are wrong and there are notes missing -- strange.

Re-route midi to default synth is enabled (going to Halion Sonic).

GS Wavetable isn't showing up as a midi input option (using Presonus Firepod). It's available as a midi output...

I'm sorry, I meant MIDI output (not input) for GS Wavetable synth. Try selecting that, make sure it's the only selection, and 'move selected device to top'. Maybe this is one of those times when it will help.

If it is playing back through default synth, it should render through it too.

OK -- I selected GS Wavetable as the only and first midi output. The results are still mixed. I get some success by selecting all of the tracks (midi and audio) and exporting to merge audio and DXi tracks. Initially the wave file is screwed up again (playing what appears to be the default synth sound for channel 1 on all notes, but then about half way through the file it starts "waking up" to the correct midi stuff with intermittent snatches of the correct patches and then by the end of the recording it's playing back all of the material with the correct sounds.

(When I try to do a straight export to wave file, it says "nothing in highlighted area to export for track x"...)

I have to confess I can't locate the from/to selectors for range yet...

Audio - Merge DXi and audio to stereo wave file

Use that command and from-thru does not matter.
It's in the Audio menu at top

Hmm. That's what I've already been trying (although I've been going through the File/Wave Files menu path). I get the same result: Wrong (default) VST patch through most of the rendered file, then at the end it starts playing some of the correct sounds.

Just trying to make sure I am selecting the right things: At recording time, I say "yes" to generating an audio track along with the midi track. Then when I'm trying to generate a wave file, I select all of those tracks to do a merge DXi and audio. Is this correct?

I guess you could use the event list and filter the results to see if there are any patch changes or other errant commands in there. This is a strange problem. Sounds like there might be a GM reset going on somehow or something weird.

I will look into that approach. I'm new to RB, so it will take a bit of exploring. Thanks for the suggestion.

First let's be clear. The midi tracks are recordings of the midi data alone, not of the VSTs. You can apply any synth (VST or otherwise) to the tracks after recording. It's important to realize this to avoid confusion.

Second, the audio tracks you elected to save with the midi tracks are of the audio rendered by the synth selected at recording time. This could be different from the synth you choose when rendering to wav. Hence you can have totally different sounds from the two recordings.

In addition, it is possible for there to be a delay between the midi and audio recordings. This is due to what is called latency, the time it takes to process the midi data into audio. So it is possible to have what sounds like tempo problems between the two.

As a test try selecting just the two midi tracks by Alt-left click. When the two midi tracks are highlighted render to wav using the Merge audio/DXi tracks to wav menu command. I think you'll find this cures the problem you are reporting.

In the future I would NOT accept the audio recording as well as the midi unless you have an overriding reason to do so. You can always convert the track to audio later if you need to.

I hope this helps.
