not exactly PT related but you guys are the best source of info I can think of. i have a movie editing package which can use vst plugins and i think a normaliser and a noise gate would help me with old home movies that have varying levels of soundtracks and ambient noise like wind in the background.

any advice? and does anyone use them in preference to the dxi plugins bundled with PT?

Hi Bob,

I suspect you're going to get a big response to this topic, because everyone has their own favorites, but let me kick it off.

There's a range of plugins by ANTRESS which have caused some controversy in audio circles. Some people think they're just over-hyped trash, whilst others think they're simply the best thing since two inch tape. They claim to be modeled on various bits of vintage equipment and this is where a lot of the argument starts.

Personally, I've used a lot of the old gear and I think the ANTRESS stuff is brilliant. You've just got to remember that the vintage equipment didn't actually work magic and needed careful adjustment to get the best effect. It's the same with these. The best thing is that all the plugins are free, so you can make up your own mind without incurring any expense. Just put ANTRESS into your search engine and you'll find several places for download.

If you decide to try them, I'd be interested to hear your views.

Regards, ROG.

Yes, they are by Antress, but I always call them the Modern plugin set.
I have a few myself and put them on the VST list in the 'known to work' thread.
http://antress.blogspot.com/

That said, PGMusic Dynamics plugin offers both needed FX in one.

The top half is an expander (will reduce noise during quiet/silent parts)
the bottom half is a compressor (to make everything louder).

It may take a bit of fiddling with dials to learn it, but worth learning.

For anything like this I usually turn to Ozone, but it's not free.

DigitalFishPhones makes a nice little collection of FX - compressor, noise reduction, and de-esser for free also (the Fish Fillets). These are pretty simple if a beginner at using these types of FX, but also very effective.

rharv,

He can't use the PG plugins - it's a movie editing suite that uses VST plugins.

This will take you to all of the free VST compressor/dynamics processors on KVRaudio.com's database:

http://www.kvraudio.com/q.php?search=1&ty[]=e&f1[]=vst&tg[]=23&pr[]=f&av[]=re

I recommend the products from Gvst for simplicity as well as visualization of what is happening to the signal.

Also, any product by this developer; platinumears, is very worthy of your interest. Here's a multi-band compressor which you might find works even better for your application:

Scott is right; PGPlugins are DXi. Some video allows DXi, guess I didn't make the connection in your original post.
(You and he simul-posted, not sure if you saw his post)

The others I mentioned are VST though. Check out digitalfishphones, easy to use and effective for something like this.

I recommend the ReaPlugins anymore after using them for over a year. Easy on the CPU, and easy to use.

If you grab them & decide to try out all the JS plugins, please read This Thread...

Most of them. All the ones I added to the list did, except VSC DXi. Some FX that claimed they didn't work in 64 bit actually did. (like PARMeter)
Worth experimenting, many more do work than don't.
